GM parts may still be available!

I needed a timing cover for my 1968 400. Long story short I found the cover is still made by GM. I called the dealer my shop buys parts from and they said they can only look up parts back to 1971. Knowing the cover is the same on a 71 and a 68, I had them get one for a 71 455. Got it the next day for $63 list price and no shipping. The cover part number is 2252-5282.

Makes me wonder what other parts may still be available. I am thinking we should formulate a list of part numbers. I am not really sure how to do that on the web site, but there must be a way...

Wow Mike! Thanks for the great list! I will add to it as I do more research in finding other parts.

Looks like you got the 442 finished. Congratulations! It must feel nice. I hope to join you soon. What do you do with your spare time now?

It's also the same on a 1990 307, which is why it's still in the parts system.

i checked with gm parts direct for the timing cover today, here is the response i received.

Hello Robert,

Part number 22525282 only fits the 260 and 307 engines. The cover you will need is no longer available thru GM.

Thank you

Yes.

Most likely, their computer only goes back to the 1980s, where the 260 and 307 were the only engines available.

Once again, you're dealing with someone who likely wasn't even born when these cars were built and only knows what he/she reads on the computer. ALL Olds V8s from 1964-1990 use the same front cover.

Mine was a perfect match for the original on my 400. Joe says they are All the same and I have yet to find him wrong about anything...

Joe is right about these parts jockeys. I work at a Chevrolet dealer and fight with my parts department everyday. Most of these guys will only look through 1 or 2 systems that they are familiar with while looking for a part. And if you don't have a vin #, forget it. It's almost as bad as going to AutoZone. What's really sad is that our "best" parts guy is a kid that thinks it doesn't get any better than a fox body Mustang.

Get 'em while you can....
IF anything is still available, it won't be for long. The 'bailout' forced GM to drop/scrap a lot of obsolete/near-obsolete parts. They're fading by the day....

Anyone know if the water outlet #12302551 has markings/stampings like the originals?

I asked my local dealer about oil filler tube 563962
and fuel pump eccentric 382892
Both N/A
dip stick and tube were but I'd have to buy 2 tubes
Not surprised, pretty old list .

Like Bill in NC said, most parts guys don't look very hard for things and I guarantee that at almost every shop the service department is constantly having to force the parts guys to find things they say they can't get. Most of them (not all) are lazy and complacent and want to avoid serious effort at all costs. If you find a good parts guy they are as valuable as a good mechanic.

That being said, don't give up just because one parts guy tells you something isn't available. I find things in our parts warehouse all the time that our parts department says they don't have.

Dipsticks seem to be a pretty common need. I need one myself. Not sure where they all go. Anyway, someone said that the dipstick from GM has changed in appearance and the aftermarket ones seem to be on perpetual backorder. I found a Cummins dipstick that is the same as the original style only longer. It could easily be cut to the appropriate length and remarked if anybody is interested. I think I will go that route. There are probably dipsticks for other things even closer if people look around hard enough.

I got a little off track. Sorry.
