fan shroud clearancing tips

So i finally got my th350 swap done. now my fan shroud rubs sometimes (455). does anyone have any tips to clearance this without trimming too much. it seems to rub on the bottom. when i push down on the radiator cover plate, it stops. it really only does it sometimes depending on how the frame is sitting (over dips and around some bends etc.)

Did you replace all the driveline mounts or just the transmission? If trans mount is new, it may raise the tail end up and angle the front down just enough for the fan to hit the shroud if the motor mounts are worn any.

I can't remember if there's any up-down adjustment on those shrouds. You should not have to trim any of it away.

I had the same problem until I replaced my motor mounts, although it was a 350. But it solved the problem.

id did replace the trans mount but not the motor mounts. that sounds right since it is hitting the bottom of the shroud. any suggestions for mounts? it is a 455 in a 68 cutlass. do i get mounts for the 455 or for the car?

For the car...was it a 350 car originally? Use 350 mounts. There is a sticky in the tech forum.

You said pushing down on the top plate causes the rubbing to stop..Just install a couple of FLAT WASHERS in between the top of the Fan Shroud mounting bosses and the two Bolts that thread through the top plate and into the clip-nuts on the Fan Shroud. In other words you are duplicating the pushing down by putting force on the Fan Shroud from under the Top Plate.

Works every time!

Just keep in mind my suggestion...I have been an Olds owner since 1977 and have seen plenty of these cars have the fan Shroud rubbing you describe. The shimming of the Top Plate is completely un-noticeable and will fix it as well with less effort and expense than the Engine Mounts.

Hope this helps and keep us posted.
