I've got a 1972 cutlass s with a 350 and I've contemplated between building that motor up or swapping it. I've decided that i am going to do a swap but don't quiet know where to start. couple of questions
1. what blocks or makes of blocks will fit my car?
2. if i went to a 455 what trans works with that?
3. are any of you guys selling short blocks, long blocks, or crate motors?

1. Any Olds engine will bolt right up.
2. Depending on how much power your engine will put out and how you use the car, your current trans will probably work.
3. If you check in the parts for sale thread. You will probably find what your looking for. There are no factory crate motors available.
To repeat, there are no crate engines for Oldsmobiles, unless you count low-performance, mass-produced questionably-rebuilt units.
You need to either buy a good-running motor, or have one rebuilt to your specifications.

Im trying to sell my built 355 but its a 10 to 1 engine big-ish cam still good to run power breaks needs 2600 stall and 3.73 gears for it to run like a scalded dog I ran a 2800 stall and I would spin em from a 25 mph roll. I have 2k alone in the short block. I will take 2300 for the engine intake to oil pan. Unfortunantly I cant take it for a spin anymore and the engine is coming out in the next week or so so firing it up is pretty much impossible now since I took the fenders and core support off along with removing the main harness.

JMO - I would stick with an Olds engine. You can find some good deals out there if you shop around. Also on the transmissions, you can bolt up any "BPO" such as the TH400 & TH350 without much modification. You may have to cut or shorten the drive shaft depending on the transmission. You can also bolt a Chevy pattern transmission to an Olds engine by using a transmission adaptor plate cost about $50 to $100 from any performance race shop. I am in the process of installing a 4L80E behind my 468 BBO in my Cutlass and have a BPO TH400 for sale with shifter if you are interested let me know.
Any Olds V8 is as direct of a bolt in as you will ever find. Aside from finding a good deal on a SBO that is already built you may as well build a BBO. It costs no more to build one than it does the other. In going to a BBO I would highly suggest swapping to a TH400 transmission. It will require a different driveshaft and yoke but nothing that is expensive or hard to get.
No one offers a "crate" motor on the Olds platform. Reason being that olds people are unique and each one want something slightly different than what ever a vendor might decide to offer for sale. On the flip side of that is that all of us Olds vendors, (I own M&J Proformance) have our basic offering planned out and can make minor changes based on the customers desires very easily. To my knowledge no one even keeps a basic short block available. BUT for a basic build it doesn't take long to build it. So you get something built for what you want to use it for, you just have to wait a few weeks for it to arrive. That's a minor inconvenience for a well thought out build.
