Engine oil pump

Hi all,Talked to the engine guy today, he said there was nothing out of the ordinary in the oil filter, He wants my guy to change the oil pump Can you drop the pan on a 67 ,400 Easy or do you have to jack the engine,Just wondering if anyone has done this in the past,The reason is the oil pressure is all over wanders from 10 to 30 when I stop in goes to 0 then to 10 It's been running fine since I took the pcv out and vented both covers and oil fill with filters ,
Any ideas
Steve

I just went through this while replacing a cracked oil pan.

The easiest and cleanest way to do it is to pull the engine.

I did mine in a day, but I don't have a lot of crap in the way.

I second pulling the engine, this way you can ensure the pan gasket goes back right and since its a fresh engine, you can touch up the paint.

It's easy to drop the oil pan while the engine's in the car. Just remove that pesky frame crossmember with a sawzall......
Don't forget to replumb the brake line when you're done.

getting at oil pan bolts behind the motor mounts is a pain- 1/4" u joint sockets and extensions
engine will have to be lifted a bit
don't break the dist'r cap
turn crank to a favorable position.

I have done it

I was talking to a few airplaine mech, the said if you get 40 psi when started the pumps alright ,why does it wander, maybe air in the gauge line so I'll bleed it and see, what else would cause a oil pressure gauge act like this?

The more I think about bleeding the oil line to the guage, It don't make sense it's a open system,am I right
Steve
I tried another guage

Its a closed system and as soon as you shut the engine off some of the oil in the line will drain back into the engine and you'll see air in it again.
