Okay big block fans I need you to settle a disagreement. I friend and I where talking the other day about my 64 Jetstar 1. I mentioned to him that it was considered a muscle car he said no it was a family car. Who's right?

I suppose the answer will vary , depending on who you ask. The Jetstar 1 was not typically considered a muscle car by the motor press, and was not marketed as one by Oldsmobile. It was a Starfire without the Starfire price, and minus some of the flashy and luxury items the Starfire possessed. It was, then, a chance to buy the 345 hp. horsepower 394 CID Starfire engine in a full sized car at a bargain price. Oldsmobile's first entry into the muscle car wars was the F-85 of 1964, with the 442 option . The central idea of a muscle car was to put a large engine into a lighter weight, mid sized car . While I agree that the Jetstar 1 and other full sized Oldsmobiles with the 345 hp. engine were lively performers and fine automobiles, I don't think they fall into the muscle car class. I own a 1962 Starfire, and even though Olds marketed it as a something of a "sports car", it was, in fact, a luxury performance car , similar to the Pontiac Grand Prix . I think your Jetstar 1 may fall into the luxury performance category as well.

The Jetstar 1 was definately a Super Car!
They had the same power train as a Starfire, but were at least 200# lighter.
Some came with a Factory 4 Speed. I know a few guys that had these cars and they would tell ya...there wasn't much that would keep up with them...
They just sold one at Volocars in Illinois.
I'm a Big Car Olds guy and had a '65 Starfire, probably my favorite. Now I have a '63 88 but am trying to find another '65 Starfire. There were even a few of them with Factory 4-Speeds!
Many a guy with a so called "muscle car" has been rudely awaken by one of these Luxury Cars. I worked at one of the biggest Cad/Olds Dealers in 1964-66 and 1969-70. Although I loved the midsize Muscle Cars....the Big ones had it all. Now they just need to start making parts available.
All of the Big Boys had a Big Super Car....Pontiac Catilina 2+2(tri power)...Buick Riviera Sport (dual quads) even Cadi and Toro!
