Cylinder head bolt position

New to 455s with a stupid question...
where do the 2 cylinder head bolts with the top stud go on my motor? I just dont remember what attaches to the top threads above the nut!
I did find this info here
" Lower row of bolts, second position from front, one on each side...on my '68 they are equal length...one for the PS and one for the A/C."

Would that be correct for my 1971 455. Sorry, i dont know what car it came out of or what accessories were attached since it was just a stripped down 455 for cheap.

On my Wifes car they are both on the passenger side but hers is an 84 307. One for a ground cable and the other one for part of the AC Compressor brackets.

It could vary between years, models and options. What year and model is it going into, AC? What compressor will be used? What length are the bolts?

I won't know the answer to the bolt positions but think the answers will be needed to locate them correctly.

^^^THIS! The stud locations depend on the accessory brackets, which depend on the year and model.

Unfortunately all I know about the motor is that it's a 1971 455 that had J heads. I've rebuilt it and put Ga heads on it.

There were no accessories with the motor (other than a TH400 trans).

Im not gonna need AC, so I'll just mess around with the brackets I've found and see about mounting up my PS and alt. U less you folks have a different idea.

The motor is going in my 56 studebaker goldenhawk.

I appreciate the help and I'll have many more newbie questions as this is my first olds motor. Thanks much.

The studs are really only for A/C cars. If you aren't using A/C and have the non-A/C alternator bracket for the passenger side, then you don't need the head bolt studs. Neither the alternator bracket nor the PS pump bracket use them. You can replace them with normal head bolts or put them someplace where they won't be in the way.

FYI - My '71 W-30, no A/C, no power brakes, 4sp has 1 studded head bolt.
Location is, right head outer center hole (between cyl 4 and 6). It is for a heat box that feeds heated air into the horn of the air filter base.
I can't speak for the second bolt.

The bolts were installed on all engines, since the accessories were not necessarily known at the time of engine assembly. Location and number vary with year. The OP isn't concerned about a concourse restoration since this is an engine swap into a Studebaker.
