Is this a crack in the block?

Is this a crack in the block?
If so, is it serious where it is?
Will there be dramas later?
Thank you
John.
42 Degrees Celsius here yesterday,
chilled down somewhat to 37 Degrees Celsius at present.

Yep, most certainty looks like it. It can be welded by a good welder who knows how to weld cast iron(maybe cast steel if you are lucky). there should be no drama involved and the good part is it's out of the car now so it can be heated easier and turned over to catch the other side if need be. New paint is in your future as most welders of cast will heat the area quite hot before grinding and welding the crack....Tedd

It sure looks like a crack. As has been said, it's probably better to deal with it now. If you don't want to melt the parent metal, I've had good success with brazing cast iron. But in any case, be sure that a knowledgeable person does it.
For the benefit of those Americans who still use the Fahrenheit scale, if I did the conversion correctly, 42 degrees Celsius comes out to 107.6 degrees Fahrenheit. That's quite toasty. Take it easy and have a cool beverage.

It has been a long time since I worked with a 394 but is this at the dowl for the bottom cover? If I remember correct, there is no bolt that goes through there? I can't remember anything other than the cover bolting to that and the dowl alignment holes. If that is all that it is there for, i would not even worry about it. If it is the way I remember it, there is not any stress there.
