College Engine Build

I found out the local community college (Glendale, AZ) has an engine overhaul program this summer. I've read here where many have gone this route to paint their cars. Has anyone found a similar program for engines, and if so how was the experience?

I went to a Community College evening adult class for Engine rebuilding around 1985. I knew a lot already but found the course helpful. I would say it depends on what they are rebuilding. We had Buick V8's to do. If its a Toyota 4cyl or the like I would say forget it.

If one is looking f/ knowledge to do w/ the basic rebuilding of an engine, why not a 4 cyl. Toyota? W/ the exception of an overhead cam or two, an internal combustion engine is just that. Infact the Toyota engine may have alittle better technology in some areas then do our American Monster motors.
If you mean that you're looking f/ a big old American V8 to go through, then I understand you not being interested.
I like the good old American V8 myself, but a Toyota 4 cyl. would be just as good f/ grasping the basic I/C concept.

I talked to one of the instructors today and learned that they use the chevy small block 350 for practice. You get theory, tear down, measuring tolerances, a basic valve job, an overhaul kit, and reassembly. All in 5 weeks time, sounds pretty decent to me. -Mike
