Hi Everyone: Question where would I look for the cereal number on a 455 ci don't know if motor is Olds/Pontiac I want to put billet compressor brkts for a/c on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I usually look on the bottom of my boxes of Cheerios.

SERIAL number.

Look for the casting number and letter on the horizontal shelf right behind the water pump, just to the [driver's] right of the oil pressure sensor. The casting numbers are usually about ¾" - 1" tall, and the ID/Code is usually a bit larger, a little over an inch, and covered with schmutz. The most common block will be the standard 455: "396021 F" or "396021 Fa". The "a", as in Fa, is actually an upper case A, but about ¼ as big as the F, and subscript to the F

We always say, "gee, we need more people in the hobby" or "why aren't younger people into cars?" Then when a newer member posts a question some jump on the spelling or whatever. When I saw his post I knew what was going to happen. It's like at the Miller Oldsmobile meet, an announcer will say four forty-two. I'll say, "oh boy, he's in big trouble." I've seen guys actually run up the stairs to the PA box and the next thing is their saying how they've been told it's four four two. Getting back to the poster of this thread, I'd say he seems like a polite fellow that joined to gain some knowledge of the older cars. I'm hoping he has an Oldsmobile and he continues using this site to learn about the hobby. Thank you RetroRanger for giving him good advice. What you don't realize is that Joseph44 has been a member here since 2014 and a member on the AACA Forum for at least that long. I have answered a number of his questions over the years, primarily at AACA. He previously asked this exact question on the AACA site and I provided a detailed technical answer there (and yes, I also pointed out that he could find the "cereal number" from Kellogs). It was after I spent the time writing that detailed answer that I found the same question here.

 

He would have realized it if he had taken a moment to look over to the left side of Joseph's post, where it says September 2014. While he's over there looking for the date, he might also look his sense of humor, which seems to have been lost.

 

I was just approaching it like everyone was gathered around the table and then the new guy asks a question...nothing wrong with having a little fun. Doesn't make me a bad person. But yes, "four forty-two" would. Some things are meant to be corrected and that's probably one of them. 42 what??? Lugnuts? no... 42 gallons of gas??? no... 42? It's history. Get it right. haha

Actually when you look at the totality of all of the guys who poked a little fun at him and all of the good they have done for everyone here, I think it is a little unfair to get upset to defend someone with around 10 whole posts during his 3 year membership.

This place is really REALLY tame compared to most forums I've seen online. I think there is no problem with joking around every once in a while with either a new or old member. Octania brought that and I miss it. Let everyone have their personality.
