I have an 800cfm Edelbrock performer AVS carb on my 455. When I am stopped and make a 90 degree turn and step on it after turning it just boggs down, no power for a moment then it catches and goes. If stopped and going straight It does not occur. I'm thinking the float needs to be adjusted but from what I have read it sounds like it could be the pump as well. Any thoughts?
thanks,
Steve
I'm gonna say stop and think about this for a moment.
The fuel pump can't tell if you are going straight or turning, it just pumps fuel.
But the fuel in the carburetor float bowl will slosh around depending upon the vehicle's direction of travel.
This is why some carbs have the float attached to different points within the fuel bowl - some are oriented for optimal operation during straight line acceleration, and others are oriented for for optimal operation while cornering.
I was talking about the pump plunger in the carb itself not the fuel pump. The manual mentions "if you encounter stumbles or hesitation" to adjust the stops. But yes, my thought was to check the float level. I wasn't aware of different designs for straight line vs cornering. I should also look into this carb to see if that comes into play.
thanks,
Steve
The E-brock carbs are notorious for weak tip-in. I spent a long time playing with accelerator pump adjustment on mine. It got better but still had a little bog. I finally changed the power piston springs (E-brock calls these "step-up springs" (which they apparently can't even get right on the package label ) and it finally cured the problem. It takes some trial-and-error, but mine worked best with the silver ones.
