camshaft id

Hello, I am trying to figure out the type or id of a camshaft I pulled out of my friends car.The car is a 67 442 w-30.It is an automatic trans car.He had the engine rebuilt with a new cam.I had a hand in some of the resto work on this car.Of course it has the original 400 engine with the ram air set up.I tried the search option on this site, but too many replies came up.I understand if there is not a # on the back of the cam, it can be id'd by the type of chamfer on front of the cam.I see a partial listing of those chamfers in the book"Oldsmobile 442 and w-machines restoration guide"page167 but I am not sure if any of these are for the cam I have.Does someone have the specific chamfer id available? Thanks,Tim

Original W30 cams are stamped "W30" on the end. Kinda simple.
Cam ID is found in the engine section of the Assembly Manual, available free of charge in downloadable pdf format at Wild About Cars.

"He had the engine rebuilt with a new cam."

Unless he got an NOS factory cam, looking for chamfers and factory stamps won't help.

Most aftermarket cams have some sort of ID info stamped in, typically aft end. Got to google from there.

Or, just measure lift and duration with a timing wheel setup.

"just" - heh

Thanks for the replies. My friend had the engine rebuilt with a new cam,and I kept the original cam and lifters for myself. The cam I pulled from his engine looked like a factory cam and had the chamfers that looked like the ones described in the book I mentioned. It shows either a 455 w-32,w33,w34,w30 with auto trans,442 with auto trans, two white stripes or 442 s.m. exc w30 with one white stripe. The problem with those descriptions is that it does not show what years those are for. It appears those might be for later model cars, but my cam has the same chamfer. It also does not say what cam specifics they are either. Thanks again,Tim

The cam detail like I mentioned above are in each years Assembly manual, but possibly found more easily in the engine section of the Chassis Service Manual (also at Wild About Cars). The CSM won't show the part number, though.
Go through each year and match your cam to what what is there and you'll know what year you have.
