Cool Cam selection...or custom grind?

While I have perused the forums somewhat, I've never come across a thread that really matches my combination or intended purpose...

I've got a BBO i'm building .30 over with (for now) Ga heads that i'm going to clean up a little bit myself. I do plan on eventually swapping out for pro-comp heads when i have the money. It will have 2323f pistons, so i'm expecting decent compression. It will be hooked to a built up 4l60e.

I currently have ~2.73 rear gears in a 8.5 10-bolt... which the gears will be swapped out in the future and a posi installed as well.

It will be fed by an EZ-EFI into an intake manifold i have yet to decide on.

I am looking for recommendations for a cam that will give the most performance, but be as tame as possible at idle. I plan to mostly just drive it around town and to the track once in a blue moon, for fun.

Just about any mild cam will do for your build. I think an old high energy comp camps 268H would work well as it sits now. Hydraulic roller with about 220-224@.050 and .550 lift would be good once you swap over the other heads and gear.

I am planning to go to a 3.42 rear gear at this point. And it is the EZ 1.0. Also looking to stay away from hyd. roller unless there is a less costly means for it.

Not sure what you mean here

If you're looking to stay with a flat tappet then I'd do something in the upper 220@.050 range on a 112 or even a 114. If you go wider then I'd keep the stagger very close or about the same on both intake and exhaust.
Let me know if I can help.
Thanks.

Sorry about that, posting from my phone is not that fantastic. As far as I have seen, hydraulic roller cam and lifters are more expensive as far as initial cost over a flat tappet. I did a can swap in my 350 olds and installed a comp thumpr cam, not the best idea with the low comp, stock converter, and right at the limit of the ez-efi.

I would definitely welcome your input and feedback if possible. Any ideas what a custom grind would run?

Flat tappet and lifters is $275.00 to your door. Roller cam and lifters is $725.00 to your door. Any grind on both.

So, I am close to moving on a flat tappet cam. What sort of specs would we be looking at for this custom grind?

Given your ultimate combination I'd do a 228/228@.050 on a 112. Lift would be .568 on both. Again in anticipation of the Procomp heads and EZ 1.0.

What sort of idle and partial throttle characteristics should I expect with this cam? With a built up 4l60e and 3.42 gears, what would you recommend for a converter as well?

Idle will be noticeable but not radical by any stretch. Part throttle will be good. Again it's a little on the conservative side due to the EZ EFI 1.0.
