I've learned that the oil dipstick tube is longer for a 455 motor from a 350 motor, but is the dipstick itself longer for a 455? I'm having trouble getting a 400-455 dipstick (backordered) and was wondering if I could use my 350 dipstick. On OPGI, the dipstick shows a length of 23-1/8" for the 350-400-455, but because the tube is longer for a 455, I'm not sure. Thanks for any help.........

How about Fusick, Brothers Automotive (www.oldsparts.com) or Tamraz. I haven't dealt with Brothers or Tamraz in many years. Any on Ebay?

 

I'll check them. I've seen them on ebay but they show they fit 350 and 455. Not sure about those but imagine they are too short.

 

The 455 tube and dipstick are longer due to the taller deck height. You can use a 350 stick temporarily if you re-scribe the oil level marks.

 

I tried to order one from www.supercarsunlimited.com They put me on back order as well.

I would imagine a replacement dipstick and tube should be ordered together to insure proper fit.

Thanks to all. I used the chart by MDchanic and cut down another dispstick and re-scribed it. Will do for now.

 

If u don't need a stock one u can get a chrome one from summit.

 

It's also different for 1967.

Crap.
This confirms that I have the wrong dipstick in my 65 425 engine.
Can someone measure the distance from the bottom of the dipstick tube stop to the full and add lines? Please?

A dipstick by any other name is still a dipstick be it in an engine or sitting next to you or telling you your Olds is a Buick just like his dad owned when he was a kid. Some of those dipsticks are long and some are short as well.

 

i use a 350 disptick in a 455.

reason, i have the 350 pan under it.

Read your manual, drain the oil and replace the filter and ad the amound of oil that the manual describe's

if it is off, put a new mark on your dipstick.

I do not race my 69' 88, and till today never had any oil problems.
I know a 455 pan should be beter, but i replaced the 20w50 with 10w40 to get a bit lower oil pressure

And i prefer original, but when in doubt check the amound of oil and confirm it with the manual

 

The manual says 4 qts + 1 in filter for capacity. I measured a Chevy stick and cut it down to size. Then marked indicators on new stick to match my 350 stick. Will be doing an oil change soon so i'll see if it's accurate. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Chris Witt has a part number spreadsheet with dipstick indicator and tube PNs and lengths for the various engines. The 69-73 350s used a different stick and tube than the later 350s, and that early one was discontinued several years ago. I was able to locate one by having a dealer scour the country for probably the last one on the shelf.

I actually have in the garage a cardboard with the IMPORTANT measurements on it- from "base of handle" or I would call it the part where the indicator seats against the tube- to the ADD and FULL marks.... and what PN, and if known, what PN tube it goes with.

What a pain to organize that info AGAIN.
