Bad viscous clutch?

Hello,
The mechanical fan in my '66 Toronado is blowing quite a bit of air while the engine is cold. I've had viscous clutches die and they would not engage - Does the opposite happen (as in they remain engaged)?

I waited until the engine got to temperature and did not see a difference in airflow from the fan.

Thanks.

That can be normal. The fluid in the clutch has to warm up a bit before it functions normally.

It's usually not that pronounced, and only for a few seconds before it calms down, but I don't think there's a hard and fast rule about it.
One possibility is that a PO changed to a heavier duty clutch - when I had a 2797 on mine, it'd blow like crazy for the first ten minutes or so of driving, before settling in.

Thank you.

I figured it couldn't freewheel completely, as the A/C wouldn't work until the engine got warm.

My 2001 Dodge Ram diesel sounded like a garbage truck for the first few minutes of driving after startup. Its normal.
