72 Alt brackets on new 455 | Alignment issue

Need some assistance. I just dropped in the 455 I built for my 72, which previously had a 350 in it. I kept all brackets, etc.

As I started to bolt up the Alt brackets, I'm having an alignment issue, specifically the bottom bracket...am I missing something as I thought the brackets were the same for 350/455 in 72 ??

The bracket setup you have isn't the same for small and big block engines. The triangle piece that is under the alternator is different for the big block. Yes, most brackets do interchange between small and big block, but this is one of those exceptions.

Sorry, I don't have an extra. But here's the two side by side and the last pictures with the small block on top of the big block so you can see the difference on that one side.

You can make the SBO lower bracket work by fabricating a 1" spacer and using a longer bolt where it attaches to the PS pump bracket. The 455 has a 1" taller deck height than the 350. When you bolted the upper bracket to the head, you now moved it 1" further away from the lower bracket. The spacer fixes that. Note that the bolt hole on the exhaust flange also moves up, so that's why the bracket is currently angled.
