Looking for a cam recommedation for a 70 455.I just want to go one size bigger than stock.smooth idle or slight lope.want to have good vacuum to run assecories.Ram air,p.s.,p.b.,a.c.,auto.trans.3.23 gears.Stock intake and ehx.manifolds.and heads.Will be running 2.5 mandrel pipes into flowmaster mufflers.

A friend installed a factory '70 442 stick cam in his stock '70 442 automatic and he seems to be happy with the change. It has 3.23 gears, power steering, and power brakes.

For a ready to go proven grind I was going to say Engle 18-20. Have you tried an Engle 20-22 in an otherwise stock application as described with good results?

This is also my plan with my 70 442 455 project. The factory 4 speed OE cam # is 406768. My only difference is I will be going with Ka heads instead of the E's. You may check with joesw-31. He may have another. I have purchased two of them from him. I also thought Joe, costpenn was thinking about having some made up as well.

That page is dated 2009 and the catalog is 2010. Do you know if they still sell Olds cams? Owner is So Cal Imports selling VW cams.

I run an 18/20 on a 110 bought around 1992.

 

I have had an Engle 20-22 in both a 4 speed car and an automatic car.

This cam has about 15-16" of vacuum at idle, so you can run power brakes.

The idle is good, with a nice muscle car rumble.

Very good street manners, and has tons of low to mid range power.

I had the engine on the dyno, and it made over 400 HP and 500 TQ.

Compression was 9.75 to 1, with light head porting, Edelbrock O4B, Q-jet, and W/Z manifolds.

 

I called the number in the link above (562-232-7079) and talked to Chris. He said that the company had been purchased by SoCal but was operated separately and still ground their own cams. Chris said that he ran the business and had worked there since 1979. He stated that the 18/20 was still available and could still be ground on a 110 lobe separation (like mine) instead of the normal 112 (if that's what you want).

I did not ask him about his 2010 catalog being the latest.

The 18/20 (and others) is also available from Mondello but Chris said that Engle is only one of the Mondello cam suppliers. Yellow box is his, white box is not.

18/20 is 216/226 488/496 normally on a 112

My 20-22 is a 226/230 at 110 LSA.

Works great in a 455.

 

The 20-22 was featured in a muscle car review article years ago where Dan Jensen of pure stock fame dyno'd one in an aluminum experimental 455. It made 427 hp at like 4900 rpm if I remember right and tons of torque. I know of other stock 455s that have the 20-22 and it's been good for them too. I've heard two specs though... 226/230 and 224/234... Mondello site shows the latter.
