65 442 exhaust

I have a 65 442 with a 400 and 4 speed. I was looking at replacing the exhaust with a Pypes SGA10S (2 1/2") system and DOF10S downpipes, I want to use the original manifolds not headers. I called Pypes tech service today and they said these downpipes won't work with the 65 without major modification. Has anyone tried these downpipes on a 65? What were the results? Any suggestions on down pipes that are direct bolt on pipes? The Pypes tech said they would work with a 67 442 but the 65 and 67 manifolds are different; I don't know those details.

I just used the pypes 2-1/2" downpipes in a 65 F-85 with the Thorton 350JR manifolds. Fit just fine.

Well go grab a beer!

I sold this car to another member and then he had me do some work to it (cam, intake, exhaust, converter, disc brakes, 350JR manifolds) We ended up doing the Pypes downpipes, pypes xpipe system and SLP loudmouth mufflers. Just came today to pick it up and drive it back to TX.

I can't really help you regarding Pypes system but I can tell you my experience with Gardner. I have never had an exhaust system go on as easily as the system I put on my '66 442. It fit perfectly and I am very happy with the quality of their product. They are expensive but in my opinion well worth the money I spent. They do have a complete system for your car. Don't know if you want to take a look at theirs. Whatever you decide, good luck with your project...

Apparently, whoever you spoke to at Pypes doesn't know those details either. The 65-67 442s absolutely DO use the same exhaust manifolds, LH is casting letter X, numnber 389269 and RH is casting letter W, number 389268. They are exactly the same.

Thanks for you responses
F85 - that's good news, I assume the the position and flange size of the Thorton 350JR manifolds are the same as the stock ones manifolds.
Fred - I like the idea of the direct replacement, I'm not sure if the slightly larger Pypes will make a difference in performance with a stock 400.
Joe - thanks for providing the details on the manifords and confirming there's no difference between the 65 - 67.
