65 442 Carb question

recently bought a nice 442, but has a later year carter on it - not a spreadbore. want to go to a qJet. any thoughts on what is best model # and year for 65 442 with 4 speed, no AC car ? car in good condition, think engine is factory specs. thank you ! david 310 6173070

I don't recall Olds ever using a Carter in recent times. 1965 was a Rochester 4GC. You'll need to change intake manifold to 1966 or later to use a Quadrajet.

Your intake and carb is a square bore, if you change to a spread ore you need to change the manifold as stated above or get an adapter.

The new Edelbrock AVS2 seems like a very good replacement, annular boosters on the primaries, 500, 650, & 800cfm models. Electric choke available and square bore design plus adjustable secondary air valve opening spring. I love qjets but for your application I'd consider this bolt on and go carb.

FYI, 1966 was the first year that Olds used a Qjet. Prior years, like your 65, came with the square bore Rochester 4GC. The AFB and clones all bolt directly to the stock intake. You would need to change the intake to use a Qjet, and then the throttle linkage would require fabrication.

If you do anything along those lines use a 770 Avenger, not the smaller one.

Evs2 looks good. Not sure if 650 best match for 400c1?

Don’t buy an Edelbrock carb, please.
And whatever you buy, buy a wideband O2.
