455 id

Looking online it has a 1970 455 has a sticker on the oil fill which is long gone. I think this came from a 70 Toro but can’t remember. It has a C casting on the left side. Manifold number cast 394548, 8019858 stamped on the oil tube. And 214 cast behind the distributor. What else can I check to see if it’s right or for Toro? Would a Toro engine work ok in a Cutlass or is there something different due to fwd?

It's a Toro motor. The intake and the Toro front motor mount still bolted to the front cover are dead giveaways. The exhaust manifolds are definitely Toro also - the LH manifold is swept up to clear the transaxle. Toro motors use the same block casting as any other Olds 455. The differences to convert it to Toro use are all bolt-ons. You can keep the Toro oil pan - it will clear an A-body chassis - but it's not your best choice for performance use. You'll need to change the oil filter adapter to one from a RWD car, and you'll need to swap exhaust manifolds to the correct ones for the chassis you're putting it into, or use headers. You can keep the intake but the depressed carb compromises the runners and may cause a stock air cleaner to hit the distributor. There are some differences in Toro accessory brackets over the years, so you may want to just use the whole water pump/brackets/pulleys set from a RWD motor. Obviously you'll want to remove the Toro motor mount from the front cover - it's a bolt-on. Other than that, drop it in.

Thanks Joe. I did put a bar on the front and it turns easy. What would be a fair price on this motor IYO and would that just be on the engine? A fellow wants it for a Cutlass but it seems silly to keep the assembly complete if most all you see in the photo will need to be replaced with Cutlass parts. I figure I can pull and store the exhaust manifolds, carb, alternator, brackets and pumps if they don’t work well for A body.

The second character of the VIN derivative is he year. 8=1968, 0=1970, etc.

Where do I find the vin? I saw a flat spot in front of the right side bank but it’s not stamped.

The first number stamp into the oil fill tube
also look at small pad just under the #1 spark under the cyl head on the block. Second number should tell you.
first should be a 3 for Olds division second should be what the year is.
