455 harmonic balancer

Was driving the 72 cutlass on vacation today, 8 hours away from home when the outer ring separated on the harmonic balancer. Don't know when exactly it came apart. Nothing else is obviously damaged. Napa store in town I'm in is getting me a new balancer first thing in the morning. My question is can I just bolt the new balancer on or should i be worried of unseen damage farther in. I'm counting on this car to get me back home.

Should be fine with the new balance. As long as the ring did not hurt anything you will be fine.

You know that the balancer needs to be attached with at least 160 ft-lbs of torque, right?

May not be right but I just use a good air impact gun and hammer it tight and call it good. Not like it is a head or crank or something. I know being on the road causes problems because the impact gun is not going to fit. Use some thread locker on it if you need to and get it as tight as you can till you get home. That is if you don't have the proper tools on the road.

I did put a dab of thread locker on the bolt when reinstalling. I've just been stopping every so often and putting a wrench on it and making sure it's still tight. will properly torque it when i get home.
