403 engine into 69 Toronado
403 engine into 69 Toronado
I realize the 403 is a punched out 350, would it be feasible to install one into a 69 Toro with tired 455? I've got a 403 with only 40k miles that runs like new... just wondering?
The 1977-79 Toros came with 403s. Your biggest problem will probably be the exhaust manifolds. I don't know if the BBO Toro manifolds will clear the transaxle with the shorter deck height of the SBO 403. Get the manifolds from a 403 Toro and no problem. Other than that, just the normal changes from RWD to FWD configuration - oil pan and pickup, oil filter adapter, and water pump/accessory brackets/pulleys.
Just the '77 and '78 Toros came with the 403. The 403 was available in 1979, but only in the 98. The '79 Toro engine options were either the standard-equipment gasoline 350 (L34) or the optional 350 diesel (LF9). All of this is in Setting the Pace. I have a '78 Toro now, and I've suddenly become much more familiar with late '70s Toros and their engine options in the hunt for parts.
Thanks fellers, Looks like in a pinch it can be done. iI a perfect world I'd prefer to rebuild the 455 if affordable, the 403 would clearly be down on power. Weighing options on an early Toro I'm looking at with high miles.
