394 Knocking

Hi all. I have a Starfire which has had a great running 394 until the last month, when I started getting some gray smoke out from rear of the driver's exhaust manifold area, next to the dipstick, and in the past two weeks a knocking from what appears to be near the front of the engine, driver's side, maybe within the valve cover.
Anyone have any thoughts on diagnosis? I'd like to avoid driving 30 miles to my service station unless I know what is going on, or I can remedy at home.
Thanks!

That does not sound good, sounds like multiple rockers are tapping and possibly other bad noises. Check your oil pressure!

Thanks for the quick reply... I figured it was going to be something with the valves or rockers based on the noise and the fact that it went with adding gas, even with the transmission in P or N.

Oil pressure, however, has been normal as always! I wish it was on the other side... taking off this valve cover will be quite time consuming.
