1966-67 400 E block

Recently acquired 400e block it was my dad's old engine I sold years ago. I just got it back and looking for recommendations on someone that knows how to build it. Block crank and heads in pictures

What are your goals for it? If you are talking a performance build you would be better off starting with a 425 or 455 and leave the scarce E blocks for the restorer looking for a correct engine for their 66 or 67.

Mild build reliable engine going I'm my dad's old car. 71 442 I have no idea why my dad had it in the car but I know he had to have his reason. He passed in 2000 when I was only 11. I don't have much that belonged to him. My mom finally gave me title to the car last year and I've spent an entire year tracking down this exact motor I sold when I was young and dumb. The guy I sold to put on a stand in his shop and never touched it. It got barried behind stuff and he forgot he even had it. I gave him his money back and helped dig it out. I'm ready to bring the car to my new home and start working on it. This engine means more to me then anyone else. Its staying with the car.

Sentimental value can be priceless! I think that it is pretty cool that you have that motor And the car to remind you of your dad.
Cutlassefi has advertised pistons for this motor that have been unavailable in the past. I hope you have the flywheel for the motor also?
If you make your location known, you should get some recommendations for a builder near you. Good luck!

I’d be interested if you are. I ship everywhere.
Crank is already .030/.030 and hopefully still usable. If not I have others.
Which ever way you go good luck on your project!

ChrisW71 if you do anything work with (Mark) CutlassEFI on your 400E. He has some nice engine combo's for those 400E's and 425. My 64 F-85 has a 67 400E and is stock for the time being but time will tell. Depending on your overall goals I think these days 450 HP is very obtainable and can still be reliable for long cruises etc. and won't kill a budget. Could be wrong though have not checked it in a while.

You are fairly close to John Stolpa, Rocket Racing, in Wisconsin.

I am curious, is that the correct timing mark tab on that engine? It doesn't look at all close to what I have on my 66' 400E block... Which is correct?... even the harmonic balancer is different....

I believe you have the correct balancer and timing tab. I initially screwed up: I upgraded the balancer on my 400E and did not put a later model timing tab on it...DAAA bad me. I bought a 455 timing tab..all is well now. Rocket Racing is a great source for these Olds engines. I heard Rocket Racing has their own big Olds block to that can make crazy HP.

The first photo, of the rusty engine, shows the 455 damper and tab. The last photo of the painted, clean engine shows the early 400-425 damper and tab, with the damper notch at zero on the tab.
