Body control module?

Body control module?
Does anyone know why the body control module on these things dies, and what to do about it? I've put three of them into our '97 Aurora, and it needs the fourth. Our '95 (bought after I'd discovered the problem on the '97; I really like these cars!) had four replacements from its first owner and needs another.
They seem to last about a year, and then electrical problems show up. The '97 lost its tail lights, AC controls, and much of the dash last time. The '95 has lost its radio and speedometer thus far. The lights occasionally flicker rapidly, with much buzzing from the controller behind the dash; according to the local dealer's shop, when the BCM goes it sometimes takes out the light controller. In fact, that is usually the first symptom.
I've seen one claim that the alternator was designed wrong and occasionally fries the BCM. According to that report, the problem can be solved by replacing the alternator with a revised model. However, our local shop knows nothing about it and could not finding anything in the service bulletins.
I'd be deeply grateful for any help. The '95 is "only" $140 a shot, and I can swap out the BCM myself. On the '97 they make you let the dealer program it at a cost upwards of $800 per replacement. It gets annoying!
Thanks.
