This is a good pair of hard to find one year only rear seat belt retractors for a 1972 cutlass and 442, both date coded 17E72, one has a little pitting on the chrome, they retract fine, price is $140 pair plus shipping.
Cool item.
Just curious, why would rear seat belts be made with a shoulder harness connection when rear shoulder harnesses were never offered? Cost reduction / part number consolidation by using the same tongue as the front belts?
Were they not offered or just very rare? The Fisher body manual shows details for rear shoulder harnesses, and my car (68 CS) has the mounting holes for them in the package tray sheetmetal.
Well that is a good question. If the body manual shows them, then I suppose they were available even if as you said they weren't very common. I have never seen a 68-72 A-body with rear shoulder belts.
hmmm very interesting. Never heard of these either. I actually have plans to add rear retractable shoulder belts (or 4 point non retractable) some day in my 71 442 Conv. Can you confirm where these mount? Do they mount on the top of the rear seat or in the package tray as suggested by others? Maybe not made for convertibles but wondering if they could be made to work.
Yes, apparently the rear shoulder belts were an available option as noted above.
