1970 442 Vert Fan Shroud

Hello all,

Quick question regarding the fan shroud on a 70 442 'vert, without A/C if that matters..

From what I've read, 69-72 cutlass shrouds are the same. Our 442 does not have a shroud (perhaps removed and not re-installed years ago). I assume all 1970 442's are supposed to have a shroud.

Reason I ask is we want to add one just to make sure the car is complete. I also think it will help draw more air through the rad.

As far as install, is removing the top guard and the fan and bolting it into place all that it takes?

Thanks

While 69-72 shrouds are somewhat interchangeable, originally 69-70 shared 1 part number and 71-72 used another. Either one will physically bolt in place. One thing you have to think about is if you are interested in functionality, or 100% correctness.

Does your car have a 4 blade fan or the 6 blade fan with a clutch? If it's the 6 blade, what is the diameter? The 71-2 part was for a 19-1/2" fan while the earlier one was for a 19" unit. It isn't uncommon for people to have clearance issues with the shroud due to motor or body mounts wearing and things shifting over the years. Getting things to fit properly may be easier with the slightly bigger opening 71-2 style unit (or if you have the bigger fan, that's essentially the only way to go).

If the two lower mounting tabs are welded to the core support unbolting the top radiator support and bolting the shroud in is about it.
I think I've done it without taking the fan off IIRC?
Here's the deal for a '71 if it helps.

I have a non air 71 442 and there isn't a plastic fan shroud. The top plate is unique to non-air models.

It's not necessarily a "non air" deal. It depended on what cooling system was installed in the car at the factory.

A non-air '70 442 w/HD cooling (ie-4 core radiator) would have come with a fan shroud and a 4 core top plate.

As mentioned in the prior post, however, a FACTORY non-air, NON HD COOLING car got a unique top plate...no provisions for attaching to the top of the fan shroud.

THIS IS WHERE A CAMERA WOULD HELP!!!!

Take a pic or pics of your current top plate and you will get more complete advice. At this point, we are all guessing to some degree since we don't know how your car is currently equipped.
