71 W-30? On The 'Bay - Window Sticker Suspect

71 W-30? Bittersweet.
59K OBO (sold at an auction a while back for 51 and change.)

Car presents well, but it's suspect that it's a REAL W-30.

Says it has SSI wheels, but those wheels aren't 71 wheels I don't think. I thought 71 SSI wheels were all chrome with no trim ring. I could be wrong on that. I only had a set of SS1s on one of my 69 442s many long years ago and that was my only experience with them.

The car has one of those "aged" window stickers that I'm not a fan of. But what's more sad is that the sticker is a repro. Does that mean the car is a fake? I don't know. There's not enough details (as usual) for documentation or providing part numbers/VIN derivatives/specialty parts verification to know for sure.

The thing that stuck out to me almost instantly was the nearly uniform pressure marks where the hammers landed. Nearly all the older stuff had the punctuation turn out a tad darker due to this uneven hammer effect. Speaking of that, the dash marks are also normally wider on the originals almost joining the 442 in the Model line. Also, pick out just ONE faded letter, say, those A's or E's. Note that the same exact fading happens for every similar letter. The alignment also stays perfect from line to line. IBM printers never were perfect in alignment. Never mind the wrinkling that makes it look like it doesn't.

Hard to say if it’s a real deal car, but it appears to be a beautiful car for 59k.. love that color. Who knows what it actually looks like it person.

This car was discussed in February 2026.

The ebay advertisement does not have any under side photos. I suppose that the seller chooses not to focus on that.
Photos of the underside are here and on the seller's website.

For those that are interested, here is a brief history of this car. It changed hands about 3 or 4 times since 2017 including Mecum auctions. It was first listed here on ClassicOlds TWICE before the flippers took ownership of it. Of-course, every time it changed hands it got cleaned up and detailed some more and the price kept going up.

Wow, didn't recall this car was the same car as the one back in February. Of course, nothing came up on a site search but maybe I typed something in that it wasn't looking for. I just stumbled across it on ebay. Still a repro window sticker, so my original assessment back in Feb stands. The W-30 isn't nearly as valuable without the W-30 stuff. Even if it had a NOM with the H heads, W intake, and carb/distributor, it might be worthy of a bit more. As it is, it's just a modified 442 IMO. Which to say isn't bad for the asking price if it's as solid as it looks.

This gets back to similar discussions recently of repro window stickers, purposely aged, etc.....
The intention of the person may certainty not be to deceive, but car changes hands several times and ultimately the item is then put forth as possible documentation on the vehicle.
I would have no issue if that window sticker had "Reproduction" stated on it somewhere...

You know, a watermark on the fake stickers would be great. Of course. that defeats the purpose of getting a fake window sticker...
