'67 442 Manual Antenna Mast Replacement

Folks,

Attached are pics of the disgusting aftermarket antenna mast on my '67 442. I'm assuming the base is factory as it looks correct from other pics I can find, so my question is how do I replace the mast with a correct one from Fusick or OPGI? Do I unscrew the chrome nut with the flats on it and wiggle the base out as it seems to be described in other A-Body forums, or is there more to it? My fear is that I unscrew the chrome nut and the antenna drops down into the fender, never to be seen again! Thanks in advance.

Mast removed - can't tell if the original mast was sawed off to accommodate the aftermarket one, which attaches with a set screw, or it's just not the original antenna base.

That base is not factory. You need an entire setup.

Well that’s a bummer - I was afraid of that. Thanks for the quick reply.

That looks like a "universal" replacement antenna with a broken mast, with a "universal" replacement mast. A double whammy! Probably broken off in a car wash. So like mentioned, you will need a complete new factory style replacement antenna. Just hope the hole in the fender is still the correct size for the factory antenna. Those aftermarket antennas can use a 3/4 inch, up to 1 inch hole.

There are still several flush mount telescoping antennas available if you like the telescoping style without the broken off mast.

GreggL, to remove I would drill a small hole in the stub and tie some dental floss to it, so if you did drop it in the fender, you could pull it out. Good luck!

You must have access inside the fender to pull the lead-in coax cable out of the cowl anyway. This cable fits into a sealing grommet.

I found an exact reproduction at The Parts Place that I think I'm going to go with but you have an excellent point that hopefully my mounting hole isn't enlarged for the replacement antenna...that would be a double bummer!

Thanks Joe - I was reading somewhere that if I pull the cowl (and windshield wiper arms), I can get at it that way without having to pull a wheel well liner. Not true? If not, I'll just wait - I eventually need to pull the fender anyway to replace the heater core, which was suspiciously not connected and open to atmosphere when I bought the car.

Copying from the '67 Service Manual, as the Assembly Manual has nothing - sure looks like I can get the antenna out by removing the cowl, but the text is confusing. Anyone pull a manual antenna on a '67?
