Question interior: '71 442

hello - i am planning on replacing my interior this spring. my car is a 1971 442 clone - from an 'S' - and i'd like to get the interior right. i've seen several different seat cover patterns and door panels available for 1971.

i believe that the correct interior has the round buttons on the seats and door panels. however, i've seen some '71 442's without the upholstery buttons - but i think they were 442 convertible models. my 'S' interior looks like the 442 convertible interior. were they the same?

please let me know which is correct for the 1971 442 Holiday Coupe. Thanks for your help and knowledge!

stock photo of my seat covers currently:

i'm thinking that this is the correct interior from a '71 442 (NOT my car):

my door panel (with pull):

correct door panel (NOT my panel - this is from a '71 442) ?:

the black interior above looks like some sort of "hybrid"...it has a 71 or 2 front seat pattern and the back seat covers are from a '70.

Your current seats are from a Supreme but you need the button seat covers and door panels used on the 'S'.

If you want the correct deep pleats between panels and not just two rows of stitches faking the appearance, you want to buy these from Legendary. It's worth the extra 20% or so in cost.

Sure is - look at the button position relative to the "pleats" on the front seats. WAY off.

my seat covers currently: This is for Cutlass Supreme

i'm thinking that this is the correct interior: Yes, this is correct

No, this is for 1970

my door panel (with pull): No, this is a Cutlass Supreme door panel. They look a lot alike from 1970-72

correct door panel?: Almost, but not quite. 1. the door emblem should be an "S". The door panel should be in "Madrid" This one isn't...it looks like the pebbled surface on the previous rear seat pic. Also, the S didn't come with the silver trim plate under the door pull.

My car is a 1972, but the interior seat and door panels are identical to 1971. Heres what the door panel and back seat pattern should be:

2008_0314MILLER0019.jpg?t=1260404608
Ignore the speaker in the door and this is a mint door panel.

2008_0314MILLER0023.jpg?t=1260404663

These are unmolested original seats in my car.

Everything Allan has posted is correct. See the nice deep horizontal pleats between the panels on his back seat photos? That's what the originals had and Legenday is the only mass-producer that reproduces those pleats properly. The other covers just give you two rows of stitching instead of the pleats. Legendary will know exactly what your car needs. They do run sales reasonably often - they may even post the code here when they have the sales.

I think they are still running the 20% off holiday sale. If not, they will run another sale soon. If they are not right for any reason, they will make them right at their expense. Great company.

They sure are, Rob. Just ordered some stuff from there.

Just go to the Legendary page and look at the Cutlass/442 Catalog. They'll show you a picture of what is correct. There shouldn't be much confusion about this. They've done their research.

As Rob said, they're a good company. You should be in good hands.

Question

hi all ~ not to hijack your thread... i was on the phone with legendary today. i am ordering a complete set of seat covers, foam, and door panels. my car is a '71 Cutlass S that was set up to be a 442 re-creation. i'm looking for advice... should i use the 442 seat covers with the buttons (problematic.) or just stick with the 'S' seat covers? i know it's a personal choice thing, but i welcome any input.

i like the regular S seats, but aside from the small chrome OLDSMOBILE strip across the trunk lid, my car looks like a 442 in every other way.

let me know your thoughts!

thanks you

Damascus, the car will look great with either.
However, I think you know what you want and I think you should get what you want - the S covers... Follow your desires... If you plan on keeping the car for a while, then it is you who it must please. As a bonus, you won't have to worry about the buttons, either!

Personally I'm not too crazy about the design of the 71 442 seats anyway. I would not go with buttons on the seats. But thats my opinion. Robs point is right on the money, I couldn't have said it better myself.

you're right, of course. that said ~ i guess i don't have to stay correct if my '71 has been changed from original. is there a seatcover year that stands out?

Wow nice car,
As long as you have the emblems and grill on already I'd go with the 71 442 seat covers.

Download the Legendary catalog and look at the seat covers - they are all arranged by year with a picture of each. Just pict the one you like most. Of course, the supreme covers wont fit since it had a center armrest.
Since the car is not original now, you are more free to get the seat covers of choice. Your car looks great - esp the color! In fact my old ford is similar color, just a little lighter.

sorry MN71W30 ~ i should have started my own thread i guess...

i did the legendary download and think i'll stick with the '71 'S' seats:
seat.jpg

as for the door panels - i like the '71 style without the buttons. go to page 18. can i use the style on the right of page 18? the button style on the left and non-button style on right both note 'hardtop coupe'. the button style notes holiday coupe and the other side notes convertible... but they both work for hartop coupe. could i use either door panel?

I do think the non-button style on the right would look better with the seat cover that you picked out (similar style to the supreme.)
I think they will fit, but not completely sure. Hopefully someone knows for sure.
I included a picture of the two panels, as that download is quite large.

If you want to start your own thread, do so and i can move your threads into it.

The seat cover pictured is for 71-72 Cutlass Supreme & convertible. The Cutlass 'S' hardtop & post coupe uses the same cover as the 442 hardtop & post coupe.
Do not confuse 'S' with Supreme.

Damascus, I merged your thread for you - took a whole 2 minutes.
I somehow missed the original thread though.

I went through the whole thread and found pretty much everyone was correct.
In a nutshell, there were two upholstery designs for buckets in 1971, the Supreme and everything-else in a 2-door style... It did not matter if it was a 442 or not.

Your car currently has the Supreme seats and door panels (no buttons.)

From the factory, it should have had the door panels with the buttons (and the 'S' emblem), like Allen posted below:

It should have also came with seats that look like these:

So really the choice is yours. Either Supreme style as you have (non original style) or S style (original factory look).
Pick whatever you like more.

thanks Rob! i finally understand now. i have a Supreme interior in my 'S' !! and if i'm following everyone ~ there is no difference between an 'S' and a 442 interior in 1971. there are two choices in 1971: Supreme and everything else. (yes?)

i was way off. i thought there were a bunch of choices in 1971: Supreme, S, & 442. i even thought the 442 convertible had a non-button interior.

even the door panels are crazy. the 442 door panel has an 'S' emblem and other models have a rocket emblem. only the supreme has pull strap too?

The 442 panels have the rocket emblems, except 1972 because everything was an option that year,& the 72 442's even had the "Cutlass" badge on the glovebox.

still working through the Legendary catalog. is there any difference between the seat frame dimensions from 1968-1972?

if i have supreme seats in my S... i would guess that there is not any difference in seat dimensions between a Supreme, S, or convertible. but i would think that the door panels in the rear may be different between Supreme/Convertible and hardtop/post cars.

No, they are the same. Also, the Supreme door panels have larger woodgrain.

Yes, they are. The styling for the Supreme carried the front door look into the back. In addition, because the Supreme was a notchback, the sail panel included an opera light as part of the interior lighting package. If you had the vert, the sail panel light would be eliminated, but replaced with one in the rear side panel (close to the front of the lower panel).

Sorry I didn't post your request (quite a while back , my oversight.) Here's the picture you requested of my 72's front seat.
