just picked up 68 442 convertible hopefully got reasonable deal paid $7500 floors trunk etc in great shape drives nice needs paint lower front fenders showing rust.i have a couple questions first rearend seal leaking on driver side how bad of a job is this to replace?do i need puller for axle?also gas gage doesnt work but i grounded wire connector in trunk and gage drops?also who makes good taillight bulb holders in taillights?was it common to have electric windows and air in the 442?also car had some type of fuel injection but credit union i picked it up from removed it and put quadrajet on.what size holley would work good with this it does have torker intake on?i thought torker were for higher rpm engines?should i look for performer to replace?

Hey Todd,
Post the numbers form the cowl tag and VIN so we can help decode things on your car.

442's were higher end cars in their day, so air and power windows weren't that unusual.

I can't answer many of your other questions, but it sounds like someone has been "working on" your car before you bought it.

For the taillights, you are probably going to have to look for a good used or repro rear harness. That should have the bulb holders on it. The actual reflectors aren't repro'ed to my knowledge, so if you need those, the used market is your place.

Do a search on here about the gas gauge issue--I have seen it before.

Others will chime in with further information.

heres the cowl tag.thanks for any help.found rear seals at napa.couldn't believe the guy they had behind counter didnt even know what car parts were.he gave me a oil pan gasket for rear housing cover?didnt have gasket on hand they left me a message not sure they know what gasket i need i have 12 bolts on cover is there more than one style 12 bolt cover?also what can i use to stop any more rust would like to get frame cleaned up.i probably wont start restore until next fall but would like to get sealed up to stop any future rust.thanks again try to get pictures out.

We have a brand new member kruss77 (Ken) that is in the automotive lighting business. Maybe you could ask him about the tail light bulb holders.

 

To replace the axle seals, you will have to open the rear cover. The axles are held in the axle with two c clips inside the rear gear carrier You have to remove them to get the axles out to replace the seals, so you will need the cover gasket.

The local auto parts stores usually carries light sockets for the taillights.

I don't know what kind of injection system it had since it was not factory, but I would stay with the quad. It really depends on what was done to the motor. Is it stock, or was any work done to it, cam, heads, etc.

If your car has an Olds axle then it has bolt in retainers and you don't have to remove the rear cover, just remove the wheel and brake drum and remove the four bolts holding the retainer in place and then pull the axle with a puller or put a sledge hammer on the hub and hit that one with another hammer and the axle will pop out of the bore...but you have to hold the axle up and centered so as not to cause any damage to the seal which is pressed into the axle tube...and slide it out carefully... tea time...

 

found that who ever worked on rearend put seals in backwards and tore seals out also they had china bearings in and dust seals had already fallen off bearings replaced them also since i had it apart.put about 100 miles on her no leaks yet knock on wood.she needs a little tender care been neglected for awhile.

3 years ago, I answered an ad for a 68 442 'vert for $9k. Based on the phone conversation and condition, I was planning on offering $6k. He said show up at 2:00. Well at 2:00, three of us pull up to look at it. He planned it that way to try to get a bidding war going on. On of the guys pulls him out of the shop and offers $12k right on the spot! And that car was a basket case. Yours is a gem compared to that car!

Nice car, Bullit! It looks like you've got the correct (original probably) wheels, trim rings, etc. Those '68 trim rings are rare, guard them with your life!

 

i was thinking about pulling rims to get painted have a good friend in body business what color should they be painted?seems car is in pretty original condition except paint.didnt know rings where that rare better keep her hidden inside.have a car run first weekend in october.last year we had about 135 cars on cruize more this year.cruzin for a cure we call it.proceeds go to cancer treatment.took gas tank out yesterday found bad connection in tank now i have gas guage again.another check off the list.wife and doc told me i needed a hobby sure is a fun one
