Was A/C available on 1970 W30 442 with a 4 speed trans.
I had neighbor that had one and I am trying to remember if it had air, I was told years ago that a/c was not available with a 4spd.

What you were told years ago was correct, Air Conditioning was not available with the 1970 4-speed W-30.

You could get A/C with the W-30 automatic.

 

In 1970, the W30 motors with manual transmissions got the 328/328 deg cam. It did not generate enough vacuum to operate power brakes, A/C, or even the power piston in the carb (which is why the 7040256 carb did not have primary metering rods). The W30 motors with automatic trans got the same 285/287 deg cam as did every other 442 with automatic that year (along with the W33 Delta and W34 Toro). The milder cam made enough vacuum for power brakes, A/C, etc. The 7040258 carb on these motors DID have a power piston and primary metering rods.

 

So Joe, regarding the 7040256 carburetor on a manual transmission '70 W30 lacking a power piston and primary rods: Does this mean the power piston opening in the bottom of the float bowl is left open and not plugged in these carburetors? From what you state, that is the assumption I make since there is limited vacuum?

 

I believe the "256" carb had a small cup plug in the hole where the power piston went, also on the base plate the part throttle adjusting screw & the staked plug that covers it aren't there on the "256" or the W31 "255", it's just a bare casting there. You can see the plug where I circled it on my carb.

Can you also tell me what number is on your base plate, the number is in a circle, mine starts with 70 and is 7 digits in total? Also what is your carburetor date?

 

My carb is a 68. I just put the pic up there so you could see the plug at the front of the base plate
