1970 - Body Tag Question

My '70 442 W30 has had its firewall repainted before I owned it and I'm going back over things properly at the moment. Would any knowledgable '70 guru's happen to know if the raised letters on the body tag were just painted over in the same paint as the firewall or were the letters white ??? I'm going from memory but I thought that earlier in the '60s these tags were black with white raised letters (but I could well be wrong).
If there is someone with an original unrestored car out of the Lansing plant then I'd appreciate your feedback. I've attached an example from an unrestored 442 (not from my car) which appears if the letters were white (but maybe thats where the paint has been rubbed off). Thanks

They and cowl/firewall should be a flat black. Mine has not been restored, not a W machine but a Lansing built A body. Some body shops will scuff the plate to make the codes stand out better to read.

Thanks Pat, I suspected that would be the case as I couldn't see them fitting the plate after the firewall had been painted. Luckily the original paint was behind the A/C box so I'm matching it to that.
Cheers

Well, looks like the paint on the raised letters has worn through somewhat over time. This weekend I'll aim to paint it riveted to the firewall. First I need to get numerous coats of paint off (very carefully) with paint stripper. Thanks 70-442-W30
Cheers

Hey, Bowite-Bri! Yes it is. Stefano is a great guy and I'm glad he purchased the car from us. Nice to know you got to see it in person.

What's up fellas?

The body color was applied prior to the firewall black out. Sometimes you can see the body color peaking through and other times the black is rubbed off for one reason or another and the body color can be seen.

Hey friend! Was just at the MCACN website. That year went by fast. Will check on flights and possibly do it again if cheap enough.

I always thought that tag was one of the cooler parts on that car. Just to see that color popping after wiping off that dust with a wet rag. Was so fun. All the discoveries. Good times.

We are working diligently to help make MCACN IX the best to date. It would be great to see you there!

Stefano and his team are awesome!! I just bought a Ralley Red 1970 442 W30 with white stripes and pearl white interior. Here's a pic of my cowl tag.

Yeah they are for sure. He spent over an hour with me at the MCACN show last year when he could have been making some additional sales. Shows you what kind of guy he is. Plus he actually knows his stuff about these cars. A true rarity.

Your cowl tag pic won't show for me. Maybe give it another try to upload it. What month is your car?

My Cowl tag should be visible now. It was built Nov. 3rd week.
I know yours was built in Oct. with a sequence # of 166007.
I was at a Muscle Car show at the Gilmore Car Museum here in Mich. There was a 1970 442 W30 4 spd. in the same color combination as yours and was also built in the month of Oct. with a sequence # of 166974! Sorry the guy left before the show ended so I didn't get any pics.

Interesting to see your tag and all the little pics you had at the bottom too. Is that a real W-27? That is interesting to know about the other W-30 being so close. Small world, especially with it being the Rallye Red/Black interior. Nice!

In regards to the rear end, I wish it was a W-27 rear end, but I have the cover. Can't say for sure if it came with it originally but it does have a cool factor.
