Trunk layout
Okay, maybe Joe or one of you more experienced folks can help.
I'm now focusing on my trunk area of Black Beauty. I have gotten the factory splatter paint and sprayed a fresh coat. I have purchased a jack set, houndstooth matting as well as the heavy rubber mat that dealers sometimes installed. I have a SSII spare tire and about to order a 15" houndstooth spare tire cover and the fastening nut to lock it down. I have also purchased the entire sticker set for under the hood and truck area. I'm confused (not hard to do) about the placement of the jack, lug wrench and such. I see there were a set of clips that the lug wrench was clipped into? But I do not see those in my trunk. Also see there is a repro clamp assembly for the jack set itself. And a rubber sleeve for the jack, that I presume is used to slide the lug wrench into to secure it in lieu of using the clips. Also, is there a special hold down rod when using the SSII spare versus the normal spare with a board and wing nut?
Oh, and some direction on the proper stickers and locations would be much appreciated too. Or just direct me to the page numbers in the body or shop manual.
I want to TRY and set things up as close to correct as possible.
MANY thanks for the help!!!!
Dave

decklid sticker should show the layout of all the items.
Pretty sure Sport Wheels use a long L and special nut what looks like a lugnut with a tiny 5/16? hole, and -no- cardboard cover with its special retainer nut.
Check your assembly manual and/or stickers for underside of decklid.

Check the sticker for proper placement.....Dooohhhh
LOL
I'm working too much and not enough sleep. Got the stickers and not even pulled them out of the package to look. Guess I need to, huh?
I was hoping someone with a '68 that may have gone down this same road might chime in to speed things up for me. I have VERY limited time to actually work/play.
Appreciate the comments though!!!
Yep, knew that with a SS wheel no board or wingnut. Wasn't sure on the threaded rod itself though, if it actually took a different one.

The assembly manual gives a layout picture in manual section 10, page 117. If you have/had the SSII wheel, you didn't use the hounds tooth cover. The hounds tooth cover was used only with the steel wheel.
Placement of the trunk decklid stickers is shown in manual section 0, page 122. Note that there was no trunk storage decal for "specialty" wheels for the '68 model year. The trunk storage decal for '68 shows only shows jack stowage for the steel wheel. You have to look at the assembly manual to see how the stowage works for the "specialty", or SSII as we now know it (even though the picture for '68 shows what we now call the SSI wheel).
If there are no screw holes in your trunk for the two clips that hold the tire iron, your car probably did not come originally with super stock wheels.
I believe the rod to hold the tire in place above the jack mechanism is shorter than the rod used for a steel wheel. The idea is to use the tire iron to loosen and remove the special nut on the rod and, if the rod is too long, the tire iron won't make it to the nut.
I have the hounds tooth matting and heavy duty rubber mat in my trunk as well. I really like the mat! I've been told that the mat can hold moisture in the trunk, though, so it would be a good idea every once in awhile to just make sure that moisture isn't collecting in your trunk.

Thanks Randy for all the info. I'm working about 10 hours a day, trying to organize fund raisers for the annual Cystic Fibrosis Foundation event, trying to handle my forum needs as well as my after hours computer/laptop service. Kinda stretched on time to get BB ready to show.
Good/Bad news on the spare cover. Seems I probably have the wrong wheel/tire. Guess I'll look for a steel wheel or go ahead and buy the clips (easiest thing to do) and hang with the SS wheel. Makes sense to have the lug wrench out where you can get to it to remove the spare. LOL
Thanks again. Will most definitely pull the mat and let her air out from time to time. Humidity here in West TN is awful!!!

Fusick has everything you need for either wheel option. I dont run a trunk mat at all. I have red towels laid down in the trunk when I show it with a few things laid out for show such as a pic album of the resto. At home I keep the trunk empty except for the spare with the lid ajar in a climate controlled garage. That mat will hold the moisture....Im a nut job what can I say.
Good plan!!!
Will keep the matting out when tucked away in the garage. Install it before showing.
Will probably order the wrench clips, use the SSIII wheel I have and no cover. Just use what I have and buy as little as possible. (Famous last words)

You will also need the threaded hold down Randy described as well as the specific spare tire nut along with the clips for the wrench. The assembly manual will show this. Fusick has all of this.
Yep, thanks. I cannot find a threaded "L" stud other than the one that uses the large wingnut. So, if it is too long I'll just cut it down to size and finish the end. I have the specialty nut ordered as well as the lug wrench clips. Should be good to go. I am missing the SSIII center cap decal if anyone has a spare. Just the decal, don't need the whole cap.
Wow...now that's interesting info.
Yes, the reason we bought BB was for entering shows and doing cruise in's.
Guess it was a spare and never had a decal. I bought one and it came in today. But I'll hold off attaching it.

Thanks again!!!

A note on the repro hounds tooth mat rubber thing. It's not that it holds moisture in it, it holds moisture under it. A trunk is a fairly well sealed thing, but if you are loading in the rain, or if you have bad window seals like I do and get water behind the wheels in the rain and when you wash the car, at that point, it can help to flip the mat up and leave the trunk open for the night in the garage.
