rear end dilemma

I have the 12 bolt "O" rear end in my 68. I want to go to a posi 3.42. I was told that any chevy 10 bolt carrier from 93 and older will work with my axle. Has anyone done this? Also wondering if there is an axle that I can find from another car/truck that will just bolt in? I need info please. Trying to find the most cost effective way to get a posi 3.42 in my car. Thanks, dave

You got to ask Monzaz, he's the king of rear ends!

That's bad info. The 8.5" Chevy 10-bolt components are not compatible with the Olds 12-bolt cover/10-bolt rear.
Monzaz or 507olds can set you on the right course.

Only if your car was built in Canada, as they used Chevy rears.

I Have a lansing car.

I believe my rear end came off an 80s camaro.
I would highly recommend the swap.

I have talked to four different diff shops and they all say the swap would work but there is some fabrication on the mounting brackets that needs to be done. Therefore it isn't a direct swap. I found a basically new (50 miles, long story) posi unit and 3.43's off a guy from here and already got them. Price was right so i am goign that route.

Are you talking about swapping the entire axle housing or just swapping the carrier and gears into your Type O. Frankly, I doubt any of the four shops even know what a Type O axle is...

I am talking about swapping the posi carrier and gear. Two of the places I am mentioning were phone calls to places that primarily deal with a-body cars and actually sell new units for the "O" axle. I have not tried it but they said it couldn't be done without fabrication. The shop that is putting my gears in showed me pics of 4 other "o" axles that he had done in the past year. That is why I used him. I asked on here to see if anyone had actually used the 80's model gm posi carriers in the o axle. To see if the shops were correct. With all of the peopel on here I only got one guy saying that he thinks his car has a posi out of a 80's camaro or something. He didnt actually have it done himself so I have reason to believe that it cant be done. If it was possible I think someone on here would of done it and been happy to share about it.

I think the shops are talking about the whole assembly. Especially if their bringing up mounts and such, leaf to coil.

With a big enough milling machine and a big enough wallet you can certainly do this. Effectively you have to machine the inside of the Type O housing to match the dimensions of the other housing. Bearing locations in particular need to match. If there isn't enough meat in the casting, creative spacers will need to be fabricated or material will need to be built up by welding prior to machining. Whether or not it is cost effective is up to you.

I am the person with the 68 olds that has the posi rear end off the camaro. I didnt do the swap myself but my dad was the one that had it done years ago. I could ask him for details but I do remember him saying that the swap fit right in without any problems, which is why he went in that direction instead of messing with the old differential.

Let me know if you have any specific questions that I can relay to him or if you want some pictures.

Thanks

Everyone on here is so knowledgeable. I found a posi unit and gears already thast is a direct swap to my rear. For furure reference I am interested in what your dad had to do (if anything) to get that carrier to work with the "o" axles. I always like to see pics of others brilliances. thanks again for the help, Dave

Fyi

I would love to see someone bolt a camaro leaf spring rear end into an A body coil spring car...not happening without mods.

Talk to Olds people & you will get much better info instead of dealing with people who know nothing about Olds specific parts.

You have 3 choices with OEM parts.

1. buy parts for your Type O - carrier & gears & install into your housing
2. swap in a chevy 12 bolt complete with the carrier & gears you desire
3. swap in a 71-71 8.5" 10 bolt with the carrier & gears you desire

don't waste your time on the 64-67 8.2" 10 bolt.
