Putting on the brakes!

My 68 442 has 4 piston calipers for front brakes. We removed, cleaned and purchased a seal kit and shoes from Napa ...did not realize that the 67 and 68's were different than the standard ones found on Vettes .....put the brakes on the rebuild till I can order the proper piston rebuild kit and the caliper hardware.

Were the 4 piston caliper available on the 69 442's?

Thanks,
Ted

No. All GM cars except the Vette went to the single piston floating caliper with the 1969 model year. The four-piston calipers are leak-prone due to the design - the seal is on the pistons and slides on the caliper bore. Any rust or pitting in the cast iron caliper bore chews up the seals and causes leaks. The single piston calipers have the seals fixed in the bore and the chrome plated piston slides through them. The piston is also easily replaced if it does rust.

The four piston calipers were 67-68 only and are somewhat rare (though repros are now available since they were used on Camaros). If you keep your original calipers, have them sleeved with stainless steel or brass before rebuilding them.

The front flex line for '68 disc brakes is the same line as for '68 drum brakes... I had my calipers rebuilt with stainless sleeves at a shop at McCowan and 401.
