Your VIN# should be like this!
The First Digit (3) = (Oldsmobile) Division of G.M.
The Second Digit (should be one of these, F,G, or J) = Model or Series
The Third and Fourth Digits (should be one of these, 57, 77, or 87) = Body Type
The Fifth Digit (should be one of these, H = 5.7 350v8, 2 BC, (160 HP), or J = 5.7 350v8, 2 BC, (175 HP). (J) has Dual Exhaust!
The Sixth Digit (2) = 1972
The Seventh Digit (Z) = Fremont, CA.
The Last Six Digits = Basic Production #s
Give me the Second, Third and Fourth Digits, and I'll be able to break down the VIN most of the way for you! One more thing, if you can get more information on your car, check for the W29 option code, because thats the 442 Appearance & Handling Package. If you have anymore questions that I can answer for you, just let me know!

As others have said, the 442 became just an option package on the Cutlass models in 1972. I assume this car has the correct 442 grilles, emblems, and boxed rear control arms with rear sway bar? If not, then it isn't a 442, but the presence of the parts doesn't necessarily prove that it IS a 442, because these are all easy bolt-ons.
