Air cleaner assembly
The white plastic breather filter on the driver's side is 1968-only. The 1969-up cars used the more common black conical filter that plugs into the valve cover on the passenger side. 1968 cars didn't use that and instead had a simple U-shaped metal tube that ran from the driver side valve cover to this breather in the air cleaner..
If you are talking about the black conical metal filter assembly that goes in the valve cover, no, it was not used for 1968. That was the whole point of posts #6 and #7. The white plastic filter in the air cleaner housing performs the same function as the one in the valve cover. Yes, you will see incorrectly-restored 1968s that have the black one in the valve cover. I found one photo of a 1968 W30 that had the one in the air cleaner plumbed into the one in the valve cover. DOH!
I thought I had something else and conflated the valve cover screen, the, at least, 70-72 elbow, and the correct one which happens to be black (dirty) in my 68. Interestingly enough, the 68 style lasted for a while longer in Chevrolet land.
Then there's the thing that looks like the end of a microphone they call a spark arrester. Not sure where it goes if it's an alternative to the PCV filter type, or if it's in the heat riser.
