Here is an add from Cars On Line for a 69 W-30 with a claimed 1 red, 1 black inner fender as built.

Being as I ordered a 1984 TransAM that rolled off the truck with one TransAM fender and one Camaro fender, I can believe it.
Yeah, it should have been caught at the drive-away, and for sure should have been caught and corrected at the selling dealer before delivery, but if original owner didn't grumble...

What the heck was up with the F-body plant ?!?

That was meant to be. A Neon with Plymouth badging was sold by a Plymouth dealer, while a Neon badged as a Dodge was sold by a Dodge dealer.

my bull **** meter broke about 20-25 years ago. these days i rely on instinct and logic.
i agree with joe.
notice that it is the right side of the car that has the black inner fender. the right side is most likely to encounter an accident (making a left turn into oncoming traffic)
although i agree that auto makers may have made some assembly line mistakes.
i doubt that a w-30 buyer would have accepted such a "mistake". The w-30 buyer was an enthusiast who payed up for this model and Oldsmobile also marketed the red inner fenders as part of what the buyer was paying for.
what happened to the good old days when people just used to find these cars in barns and abandoned farms?

I like Joe's theory.
Do you want to get back on the road quciky after a fender bender or wait around for a red inner fender. [Which I assume we're not laying around in stock in every body shop]
