Posting this here since as a newbie I can't seem to post in the 442 section yet???

Wondering if anyone has any photos or diagrams as to exactly where the brackets which hold the under bumper scoops bolt to on the frame? I thought they may attach near the duct hole using two of the three existing bolts close by. However, when I did that, they (the brackets)appear not to be long enough to extend the scoops to the right locaton.

Now wondering if they bolt to a slightly raised area on the frame, just behind the bumper...but that appears to require drilling? I want to do it correctly so any help would be appreciated.

 

You are asking about the w30 option I think. I don't believe they were using the oai designation until 70. There was some discussion about this last fall. I will try to find the link, but will take some time. Look in the cutlass/442 forums, you may find it faster than me. Would likely be posted scoops or w30, something along those lines. Generally speaking they bolt I think to the frame, bumper brackets, and have a support that ties to the core support. They are routed through the splash guards, or inner wheelwells. I don't have one and have not actually looked at one in person, so info may be off a bit.

 

The brackets should be long enough to go from the plastic fender apron to the scoop. I don't remeber exactly, but mine had about 6" long "L" shape brkts that bolted to the fender apron bottom and was attached to the scoop. With the neck of the scoop thru the apron and the clamp on top for the hose.

Thanks for the replies. The kit has the "L" brackets you referenced, but they are about 4" long, not 6". That's why I'm begining to think the brackets attach to a raised area on the frame instead of the plastic inner well where the hose attaches...but not sure?

As for OAI designation, you could be right. I thought I saw the '67 & '68 adds referencing the Optional Air Induction, but they spelled it out. So I'm thinking by '70 it was an abbreviation.

 

Actually, the O.A.I. designation has been used since 1966. Keep in mind that by 1968, there was the W-30 and W-31.

The one bracket attaches to the weld nut on the back of the rad cradle flange and the other two attach to the fender liner..hopefully the comming photos will show it well...and the scoops are Force Air Induction..

Every time I look at those things I am amazed they don't get ripped right off at every steep drive , or a good chuck hole.

 

Equally amazing, I understand that there was briefly a set of "covers" for the scoops (for inclement weather) that are now quite RARE. I have never seen them other than in an old Road & Track Test drive of a Forced Air Induction 442.

Anyone know of these please chime in???

Well, I got the scoops all in place this weekend - a bit more involved than I thought...but projects generally are that way. Will button up the hoses and re-route washer fluid bottle to opposite fender well tomorrow.

I'm looking forward to the first spin in it with Forced Air Induction and hoping to suck a Prius up the left scoop and burp it out the left Trumpet tip )

 

4speedBench what kit did you use and did you like it?The set that is onthe hard top car is in need of some work,tires cut threw the scoops dont know if I'll fix or buy new.How was the air cleaner like the old or light weight,just got a new tri-power for the 58 did not like metal not the same look but new.Thanks for info can you post some photo of the install.

I bought mine as akit from Parts Place Inc. about a year ago. Though the box said "made in Taiwan" the components looked pretty good to me. The air cleaner may be a slighlty lighter gauge, but hardly noticeable, if it is. The air cleaner has all correct provisions, cut outs for breater tube etc.

The kit had the air cleaner, hoses, clamps, scoops, brackets and stainless trim for the scoops - pretty much all I needed. There were no instructions, hence why I started this thread on bracket locations. Between the folks on this site and some shots I saw of an old w-30 engine compartment on Ebay, I was able to get the placement correct. The only thing I'm not sure (since I never had an original scoop) is whether the kit's plastic scoops are thinner than the originals? Not sure?

I'll attemp to post photos here. I did not take pixs doing the bracket area...I was too busy cursing and looking for tools

Hope you get the OAI scoops installed, and post pictures of completed installation. I'm in process of fabricating close resemblance to the $375 pair listed in a lot of the Olds suppliers catalogs. Never made a mold out of styrofoam, but am learning. IF IT WORKS, will post how it looks. If it DOESN'T WORK, you'll never hear me mention it again. Still tweaking the Silver Bullet.

Hello All,

Nice to see the reproduction scoops fit well. Joe from the parts Place used my original scoops as a guide to make the reproductions. I produce the stainless moldings for these also. They are very close to the originals in shape and may be a little lighter in thickness, but not much.

I added a few photos of the scoops assembled and one of my '68 OAI Air Cleaners I use to make from cores.
