Thumbs up 1991 442 w/W41 engine

Hello-I own a '91 442, W41 version. Until recently it was a daily driver. I have read that this car was one of 204 to come off the line. Is this true? How can I tell the production number (sequence number). I like the car and am debating whether to sell or restore it. (Obviously I am a newbie on this site-any help is appreciated).

Contact the GM Heritage Center. For $50 you can get a custom package on your car. I think they need a rubbing of your VIN. Call them to find out for sure.

Per 442.com

This is what 442.com had to say:

W-41

1991:
Again, W-41 was used as a Cutlass Calais Quad 442 option.

It was produced during the 1991 model year. 200 cars (mostly Achieva) were made mostly for racing.

Engine: Quad4 H.O. 2.3 liter, 4 cyl, 190 bhp (Vin A? - LGO)
Transmission: Getrag 5-speed, 3.94 final drive ratio, limited slip
Body Style: 2 Door FWD coupe (Calais, Achieva)
Distignuishing characteristics: Silver striping (4- ¼" stripes)around car, trunklid spoiler, ~30 MPG Highway. Very few options were availible since made for SCCA racing.

Notes:
Olds test results: 0-60 in 6.8 sec, ¼ mile in 14.6 sec (95.7 mph speed at trap).

EPA 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway.

Differences between 180 hp VIN A and the 190 hp VIN A include: hotter cam profile, lower restriction exhaust, and taller transmission gearing.

Won 6 out of 9 IMSA Firestone Firehawk races in 1991.

The most distinguishing feature is the W-41 emblem on the moulding on both the driver's and passenger's front rocker panel. The other exclusive feature is the bright red, with silver stripes, W-41 cover over the engine (plugs, cams, etc.). The words on the cover say "Made exclusively for Oldsmobile". In the center is an Olds rocket next to a "W30" marking.
Hope this helps in your decision.

i know that this is an older post but want to give an answer for future people that may look it up. the only way i know of obtaining the order number of a W-41 is to have the window sticker. at the bottom of the window sticker, in small letters you will see "ORDER NUMBER" and followed by W41xxx. mine is the 9th car so i have W41009, this will go all the way to W41204.

while I realize this is an old post, you are mistaken. Olds came out w a 442 in 91' & a rare W41 option that was a bad *** 200hp balanced & blueprinted 4 cylinder. It was featured in hotrod magazine on the cover.
My stepmom has owned one since new. It was a corvette & mustang killer.
Hers still looks great & screams like a monster.

"Old" is an understatement. This thread nearly qualifies for a learner's permit. In any case, that person you are responding to only made four posts to this forum, and last logged in during Sept 2006.

If she ever wants to sell it look me up! I sold mine mentioned above and out of all the cars I ever sold, that is the one I want back most.

Nice car, take good care of it (looks like it has been), not too many left. I always liked the '91 Cutlass Calais versions of the Q-442/W41s, but never seen one in the wild. I did see a '92 (?) Achieva W41 once in the wild, a long time ago. Not as good looking as the Calais IMO.

A few years ago somebody on here found one of these in a junkyard and was working to bring it back. Then it just seemed to disappear.

Update. The search function found it and the last post was October 2017. Here is the link.

Oh. I was thinking that might have been where this engine came from. Yes, that's an IH pickup with a Q4 driving the rear wheels, as seen on Hot Rod Power Tour 2019. No, I don't know if that's a real W41 motor or just a coil cover.

I would guess it is a real W-41 engine. The cover had to at least come on a car and not over the counter. I tried to buy one of these covers a couple times between 1992 and 1993 and they were not available. you could only get the HO version. If you had a W-41 and somehow lost or broke it and needed to replace it you had to get the HO or standard cover. They had a part number for it but there was no price and no availability

The W41 IDI was available as a service replacement part for a short while.

The difference between the regular LG0/W40 and the W41 was as follows:
EPROM (chip)
Camshafts
IDI
That was it.

And the buffoon who said that there were no 442’s after 1987, should really think before posting.
Oldsmobile’s final incarnation of the 442 was the “1990-1991 Calais Quad442”;
If my memory serves, this time around the play on “442” was:
4 cylinder
4 valve
2 (dual) exhaust.
I have period sales literature, but rather than spend a bunch on sakes literature, I had mostly focused on trying to acquire 1989-1994 Rocketparts catalogs.
