As long as you have an X in the VIN, you've got a rare one there. Nice acquisition!

Thanks Slowolds. The other folder on Photobucket is pictures of stuff I sell on Ebay. No buying trains unless dirt cheap. Hard to make a profit on them right now, economy and all. Brian

To check the engine's VIN (and the M20 trans as well), scroll down to the diagrams on this page from my '72 V Code website:

I got copies of everything from 1972 that was in the Oldsmobile Production Binder from the GM Heritage Center in Sterling Heights, MI in April 2007. Lots of handwritten notes on these, and the archivist even noted that believe it or not, those were the actual production records. The 289 W-30 4 speed hardtop figure is noted in several places. I'll probably scan these pages and post them to my website - I may as well share what I have... The "Oldsmobile 442 and W-Machines Restoration Guide" book quotes these production figures as well.

you think the train hobby is down, the car hobby is even worse, now that I see the pictures, you have the wrong valve covers and ignition wires just to name a few things, I'd dump this car before you get caught up in the "perfecting it" mode. I'll take it, I have some American Flyer engines to trade for.

The car looks awesome and with the X in the VIN I'm with you on having a holy grail of olds, nice color combination and I think its great that it is slightly modified, enjoy the car as is- great find!!!.

Hi Brian,

Nice looking car, I really enjoy my '72 4 speed as well.

I am just in the process of refurbishing my engine bay as well by correcting a few things, there are a few things though that I will have do at a later date.

John.

Hi Brian,

Yes that is my car, I will post some pics soon.
I am just about finished detailing the engine bay and hope to have the engine back in by next weekend.
I have also had the seats recovered in the correct upholstery, mine is a bench seat car.

The 70-72 are my favorite Olds as well, I had a very nice '71 442 for a few years before I got the W30.

Cheers
John

For some reason (real life), I let this thread die..... Didn't mean too, just got busy. Vikingblue, make a BIN offer...... You never know, LoL. Wrong valve covers & wires were mentioned as wrong, What are right? I'm been looking for new valve covers, brushed aluminum with raised "OLDSMOBILE" letters would be nice, not necessarily correct though. The former owner did a few changes under the hood, I'm just not sure what I should do to either correct his wrongs or make my own statement. I was thinking MSD Ignition, Wire, Valve Covers to start. I am also contemplating adding Power Booster to braking system. What's your thoughts?

I'm going to post this here. I knew when I purchased my 1972 442 that the engine was "said" to be out of a 1971 Toronado. Not sure how to tell by just looking at it but it does have "G" Heads which denotes 1971, but what from what 1971 I really don't know.

The guy I bought it from said the original owner blew up the original engine & replaced it with the 1971 Toronado engine. I am trying to decide if I should proceed with my Winter 2012 project of adding a Crane Cam, Holley Carb, Headers, EMI Distributor & more. Hopefully joe_padavano will see my post & offer some of his knowledge. And of course, anyone else who has facts to pass along. Thanks

I think it's important to note that the amount of 4-speeds being quoted is for all coupes only or including convertibles?

Really, what's possibly interesting about this car is whether it's a Cutlass hardtop, Cutlass S sport coupe, or Cutlass hardtop.

What exactly do you want to know? G heads are consistent with a 1971 motor, but of course those can be bolted to any 455 block. The VIN derivative will tell you the year of the block. Other than that, there's not much you can tell from the outside of the motor. You'd need to pull the heads and measure the valve sizes to see if these are big valve heads, and you'd need to check the cam lift and duration with a dial indicator to know what HP rating the motor is.

Trying to figure out if it's worth rebuilding the block I have. My goal is to make it a ground pounder since it's not original to the car to start. I read through my pile of emails from the previous owner & I was mistaken. The motor is out of a 1973-74 Toronado, Not a 1971 as I first thought, making it an 8-2-1 compression motor. From what I'm being told, I wil need to replace Heads, Pistons ect....... That's going to make it a much more expensive project than first thought. Any opinions or suggestions would be helpful.

P.S. I need to find out what the Cubic Center-meters is of my G Heads is & if I have "Dish" pistons. Is there a chart or info no this somewhere.

OMG what a disaster you've got yourself into. Sounds like you'll need to out about 50K into it, and even then it might still run like a 73 Toro.

once again, pm me with your BIN and I may be able to help you out of this expensive pickle. I have a soft spot for PNT 26 cars.

Looks to me like your car started life as Baroque Gold with white seats. Are you sure about that "947" trim code? I've never seen that one. Could it possibly be "937"?
