1970 Rear Glass Removal

My rear glass seal is leaking and need to be resealed. I hope to remove WITHOUT breaking. Should I use a pull knife or what?

I also need to replace the package tray and may tint the back glass off the car.

Thanks.

I just pulled the windshield on a 70 LeMans. USE THE STRING METHOD. It is 100% easier than using the knife. With a string a 1st timer can get one out in about 30 mins, I'd say 10-15 mins once you have done a couple.

I don't know about string, but I've always used music wire. Remove the stainless trim around the window. Cut about a 5 ft length of music wire. Push the wire through the urethane seal between the glass and the pinchweld. Wrap the ends of the wire around a pair of large dowels or similar "handles". Work your way around the perimeter of the glass using a combination pulling and sawing motion. You may need two people to do this, one inside and one outside.

Once you get all the way around, gently remove the glass, using gloves in case it does break. Clean off the remains of the urethane on the pinchweld. Be prepared to find that the leak was caused by rust holes and not the urethane seal.

MIG wire works great, Wear gloves and get help from a friend.

Thanks, I will try the wire. I have removed the trim and there is no rust, the glass has seperated from the sealer on the lower drivers side about 4" or so.

You're halfway there now. All you gotta do is force the wire through that gap you mentioned and slowly use it to cut through. It should cut through that stuff pretty easy. Now if it is cutting easy and then all of a sudden gets really hard to pull through its because the wire is getting caught on a piece of metal that is making it hard to pull.

I kept getting my wire caught up on the clips at the top of the windshield on the outside. I broke about 4 pieces of wire before I realized I was trying to cut through the metal on the clips and had to move the wire so I was not hitting the metal

You mentioned the knife. I have one of those window knifes, with a L shape blade, and big handle, and pull cable T handle, and it works great.
