I bought it.
My first 442. It’s going to take a lot of work.
Pictures soon.
After a 2-hour inspection, I bought it and dove it home. We made the 80-mile trip without any real issues.
First stop, the gas station and it took 19.99 Gallons of 93 octane.
About 70 miles later, one of the wheel center caps broke off while in a highway clover leaf.
A little later, while driving slowly and taking a sharp right turn the engine quit.
After about 5 minutes we got it going again. I will assume is was dirt in the carburetor.
The next day, I tried to start the car and the carburetor just overflowed with gas.
I am now in the process of rebuilding the carburetor.
First issue, it’s NOT the original carburetor, #29244 KA 0169
This seems like a Buick 1969 carburetor?
Jets = 70, Rods = 43B
Inside is the typical sludge. Missing fuel filter and spring.
1969-442-Green
Known Facts.
VIN 344679M221185
Decoded:
3-44-67-9-M-221185
3 = Oldsmobile
44 = 442 V8 (1968-1971)
67 = Convertible
9 = 1969
M = Lansing, MI
221185 = Production Number Sequence
Engine:
It’s a 1969 400 ci. Can’t read the engine number yet, too much rust.
I kept the speed limit all the way home. The engine felt good. No smoke, no hesitation, smooth.

If you need a used wood grain piece for the ash tray door, I've got one for you. Just send me a personal with your address and I'll mail it to you in an envelope!
Looks like you got a good start, especially as it runs. Have fun with your restoration. You will enjoy it that much more when you are finished with what you plan to do!
Thank you for your words of encouragement and parts offers.
This car came with a trunk full of parts, some new and some old and some unknown.
I just found the wood trim for the ash tray, great.
I deiced to send the Carb to a local reliable shop. This Buick carb needs more attention than i can give.
The car needs so much, I decided to start with the stuff to make the car legal.
3 of the headlight were out. After 2 hours, I had all 4 lights working (electrically)
However the mounting hardware was too rusty to salvaged. Hello OPGI.
PS. Where do the High beams go? Outside edges or Inside?
On this car the two Outside are High-beams.
On my 1971 CS, the High-beams are on the inside.
A local Olds guy is cleaning out his garage and has been bringing me gifts every few days. He just dropped off 4-Halogen headlights and 8x ACDelco R-45S spark plugs.
Question: My owners manual says uses R-44S plugs for the 400 ci engine.
Will the R-45s work on a 400?
While i am waiting for headlight parts, I will start refurbishing the seats and rear trim sections. All of the mice and Ants have been evicted.
The door cards were beyond repair.
I ordered new carpet.
And you will get WET when the top is UP.
New topic:
I want to buy some engine paint.
Ideally a few shaker cans of engine color for Valve covers, etc
And a can of brush-on engine paint. I do not plan on removing the engine.
So a can of paint would work nicely.
Does anyone have a good vendor and "Part Numbers" that i can order the correct bronze color?
Thanks
Maybe I will see some of you at a Massachusetts or NH car show.
Check www.supercarsunlimited.com for possible bronze engine paint in cans. They used to sell it that way but I don't know if they still do. They definitely have bronze engine paint in rattle cans.
The dash VIN = 344679M221185
The engine Serial Number = 39M221185
The first digit of the serial number does not match the dash VIN.
The engine has a “3”, the Dash-tag has a “7”.
I just completed a basic engine tune-up. I will check the compression soon.
What are the best stetting’s for a 1969, 400 CI engine
Timing, Vacuum, Oil flavor, etc.
I am also planning on ending this thread and starting a new thread in the Rebuild section.
Thanks everyone.
