1968 442 Exhaust question
1968 442 Exhaust question
If I am running the original manifolds on my '68 442, I want to get a 2 1/4" pipe system, correct? I don't want to get the wrong size system, not to mention I'd like to fit the original "trumpets" on the tail pipe (which I believe need to fit a 2" interior diameter).
Thanks.
Thanks.
That is the correct size, but you can use bigger if you want. I have 2 1/2 inch exhaust pipes on my 72 VC, and crome tips on a 70 with 2 1/2 inch tail pipes, had to weld them on, but I think the company Pipes, not sure if that is the correct spelling, but that is were I bought the 2 1/2 down pipes, and I know they also make 3 inch tips.
OK, thanks. Well, I'd like to use the factory trumpet exhaust tips. Which, I'm not sure will fit properly with a 2 1/4" pipe either. If the inlet is 2", which is the original tip size, then is should really fit a 2" pipe, I suppose.
What have people done in this case? I definitely want to keep the original exhaust tips.

My friend owns an exhaust shop. He has a hydralic tool that stretches the pipe to fit a new bigger diameter. All good shops should have this. I watched him fit an originally smaller pipe onto a larger pipe with no problems. I agree with you. I want the stock tips too. They look the best of anything I have ever seen. GM wasn't sleeping when they made those.
