Yeah, it's Four Four Two, not Four Forty Two....

 

I remember Col. "Shorty Powers" from the NASA program. He was the voice of NASA. Having grow up in the 50/60's, everything was about the space program. We all idolized anyone from the space program plus being in Ohio we had the first Man in space. Hey, Olds did have the "Rocket" engine! My first experience with a REAL FACTORY muscle car was a 1966 Olds "442." My Fr iend's Mom died of cancer. His Father was an Oldsmobile guy and he then bought a new 1966 Olds 442. It was a red, post, small hubcapped 3-speed all-sycronized trans. car. We thought that car was like a Ferrari even though it was a "bare" bones 442. He flogged her regularly. I always thought he 3-speed was faster than the 4-speed 442'. The reason was because once he raced a 1965 4-speed 442 and beat it easily. After we graduated in 1968 he was racing it at a back-road we used as a "drag-strip." On some Fri-nites 10 to 20 cars would be lined up racing for $5/10's. After a couple runs he was racing a GTO and had brake fade and put it in the ditch because the road dead-ended in a T. He bent the frame but the insurance company paid the fix it because it was a little cheaper than totaling it. Long story but Olds sent the wrong frame(4-door) and it took almost a year to get it back. By then he was in the service. I lost track of him. I would see his Dad driving the 442 every now and then. I last saw it around 1990. He was living in Alanta,Ga and died around 1995 and his Dad died a year or so later. I don't know what ever happened to the car. Later, Ken
