1966 442 E block

Looks like i found an E short block and i have a set of big valve c heads and a set of small valve b heads . My issue is being a 1966 should i use my c heads or have the b heads rebuilt with big valves ? The car is pretty original but not 100% was thinking restomod now thinking keeping it as close to original as possible any input would be appreciated .

I would have both heads checked for cracks before deciding.

since you went and made the extra mile and effort to find a good correct original 66 400 E block and the engine is for a 66 not a 67 i would definatlely go with the correct B heads regardless;
or look for some 66 toro big valve heads and sell the small valve heads .

If you're going to do that, why not just use the C heads?

Anyway, I'm with Koda -- get 'em magnafluxed. That may help you decide.

If you care about having the "correct" heads for a 1966, just have the B heads cut for larger valves. The castings are the same for big and small valves.

1966 and 67 used the same intake. The 67 carb is preferable anyway. Those first year Qjets have a lot of issues, including the goofy inlet valve. The 1967 carbs corrected most of these. No one will be able to tell unless you remove the air cleaner.

No one is looking under the valve covers anyway . Would love to here from Mark on this i have alot of respect for what he has done with oldsmobile engines . I am a regular working guy so its important not to just throw money at this car . I plan to drive it as much as possible which means about 6 months a year .

This^^.. use the 67 or later quadrajet, build the engine for what your main use will be..to many over build, over cam, then complain its not as easy to drive..buildafun, reliable street engine with modern cam profile, good exhaust, match up the converter to the rear end gears , unlessyour going manual trans. Enjoy your car…thats whats important

Is there anyway to tell if the block is 1966 or 67 there is L12 casting # inside the timing cover and a stamped #3868 on the pad on the block?
