Rim sizes for 72 cutty

Hi guys, my mate wants to fit chunkier alloys n tyres to his car, its standard rear end drums but I recently fitted discs to replace the drums. My question is what's the maximum size/width we can get in the arches to fill them up and avoid any fouling. I suggested 15inch rims ( he wanted pimp type 19s LOL) but I think there's more choice in 15 tyres. Any suggestions please gentleman.

It does depend on the offset of the wheels. As noted, 255/60-15s fit at all four corners, at least when using stock 15x7 wheels with zero offset.

If he wants to run larger rims, 285/40/17 or 285/40/18 will fit in the back.

My car (signature below) has 18x9 front and rear, with 255/45 front and 285/40 rear tires.

Max allowable offset is a function of wheel width and selected tire size. More to the point, a near zero offset will typically allow you to run the widest tire possible, as it centers the tire in the wheel well. Occasionally you might find that a slight offset one way or the other will yield a little more clearance when you're pushing the max possible width, but as a rule, zero is best.

These cars tend to look best with tires in the 26.5"-27.5" outside diameter range. The suggested 255/60-15s are just over 27". 285/40-18s are also just under 27".

Sorry, I meant to add that to the last post. All 1964-1988 RWD Cutlii use a 5 x 4.75" bolt circle.

I have 315-35-17 tires on 17x11 wheels with 6 " backspace on the rear of my 72 442 and they have been on for almost eleven years and I have never had a problem whatsoever. I could lower the car with no clearance issue. These 70-72 Cutlass bodies have cavernous rear wheel wells. I have also had 29-12.5-15 MT's on the rear and I have also seen 325-50-15 tires on 15 x 10 wheels with 5.5" backspace fit and look great.
