Riddle me this... on wheel centercaps.
Ok so recently I've uncovered a "flaw" per se in the world of re-pops vice genuine GM products. SSII and SSIII center caps to be precise. So here is the run down.
Usually when a GM part goes out of production, any and all surplus is then vetted to a company that MOST restorations guys know called Vintage Parts Inc, or VPI. THEN and only then GM will begin to sell licensing for reproduction parts. Never have I witness a repop AND a GM part available at the same time...until now.
Right at this very moment the center caps are available via GM dealers. They are also available as repops via all the bigger supply houses, $175 each from Year one, or $49.99 each from the Parts Place Inc, OR genuine GM for like $100.
I have seen so called repops come with the part number moulded into the inside, and some without.
Can anyone tell me if GM has in fact gone into factory reproduction on these units to make a buck?

Most "new stock GM" parts I see are in the modern "blueprint blue" box with GM Reproduction Parts logo.
Real old stock should be in the turquoise blue and white box, though I wouldn't put it past some unscrupulous sellers to put a repop in one of those boxes to pass it off as old stock.
If I had to guess, I'd say that since GM licenses production of such stuff, part of the licensing agreement may be that they can sell it thru dealer channels.

i *think* gm will contract to have a certain number made, by whoever, using old tooling-or new, IF they think there is enough money to be made. case and point: '69 camaro front end trim, i ran across a bunch of it when i was at vpi, years ago. i doubt they were just disco'ing it back in ~'08. they were bulk packed, so no gm packaging. and then there were the brand new, current model year poncho rear bumper covers that went to vpi and were promptly scrapped(no sales history). 6 months later, gm wanted them back.
i dare you to try and figure out what is going on in "gm's mind".

That would depend on which type cap was being purchased.... I have several SSII's (402926) which I purchased in late 70's & early 80's and were boxed differently..... I have some in small corregated cardboard white boxes with blue lettering as well as some in corregated cardboard brown boxes with blue lettering....... But, you do have to remember the SSII's were a larger/heavier cap as compared to the SSIII's.........

Don't lump all of the SSIII's together as snap on, as the first SSIII's were bolt on center caps, starting with the Rallye 350, and '70 pace car replica's, what made them SSIII vs SSII was that they were painted the color of the car. It was a couple of years later (1975?) that they went to the snap on cap, and of course since 1971 they were painted body color, and hence SSIII.
