Proper Tire Pressure

I bought a 1972 Cutlass convertible, It came with 215-65-15 Firestone Indy 500 Firehawk tires. Well I took them off to clean up the wheels and rotate.
Well I checked the tire pressure and they all had 42 lbs of pressure in them.
That seems high to me, but I can't find on the tire the recommended tire
pressure, It just says not to inflate over 44 lbs. Well I took them down to 32 lbs, I hope that's OK. Does anyone know if 42 could be right. Thanks Barb.

Most tire manufacturers recomend whats on the factory tag, I think your fine with what you have them set at, maybe touch more would not be out of the question! p215-65-15

You cannot use the factory tag, as produced above because the tires listed on there are for bias-plys. I would air the tires on your car to 35-38 lbs.

When you checked the tires at 42, were they hot after a drive, or first thing in the morning cold? A hot tire can read 5-6 lbs higher than a cold tire!

35 cold has been my rule for radials in use.
For long term storage, 40 is fine to reduce flat spots.

Thanks for the reply, It was kind of a stupid question. Everyone on this site is so nice and helpful. I'm just puzzled why they all had exactly 42lbs in them.
OK, I'll go with 32 to 35 and thanks again for taking the time to answer my question. Barb. PS. They were cold, but the high pressure in storage ( avoid flat spots ) could be why. Very good thinking. Thanks Barb.
