power steering conversion for a 55 Super 88
I'm wondering if anyone knows of a power steering conversion kit for a 1955 Super 88? I bought the car a little over a year ago for my wife, but the standard steering is a bit much for her to handle. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

If you want a factory setup create a parts wanted post and include your general area. I've got most of not all you would need in Southern Oregon. but shipping would be expensive. If you could find a setup near your location you could save some money.
Another thought worth exploring. I understand the 1956 used a column that does not have the steering box built in. More like newer cars with a power steering box that bolts to the frame separate from the column. I don't know all the details on how it might be adapted, but I believe others here might. John

Your car has a rag joint and is easier to remove. Some convert to a jeep box for shorter lock to lock turns but I haven't ever done this. By the way I have no problem with the stock power system, works well for men and women and looks correct for the car if that is important to you. Only difference is getting use to the difference between a Miata that takes less than one turn lock to lock and 2 /12 on the Olds. I have to make a mental adjustment every time I switch cars and I do notice it...Tedd

Nobody makes an aftermarket kit for the 55 Olds. The 54 and 55 are the same but the 56 is different. The steering sector for the 55 is large and the shaft runs all the way up to the steering wheel. You will also need a double pulley harmonic balancer and water pump pulley. And then you will need the pump along with the bracket and pulley. New lines can be fabricated but you will probably need the old one for the fittings. As Jon mentioned, the sector is heavy and freight will be costly. I know some folks have installed the steering from a Cutlass but it requires somebody with some good fabrication skills.

I see on Ebay conversion kits(upgrade) for many different applications, just none for a '55. I was just wondering if someone knew on an upgrade kit that i didn't see listed. It sounds like the '55 is different enough no one may make one. After i posted this, I saw a listing for a complete stock unit for sale by a fellow that lives not too far from me, I guess I'll give him a shout and see if its still available.
